I'm a bit confused about the improvement claims, the following picture is unclear if they are comparing it with the 4000s or the 3000

As I'm 179cm/90kg I'm moving to 25s. I've heard a lot about the GP4000.

Not sure what to get (or where) - I'm after a decent ride with good puncture protection and grip. I don't race, nor do I regularly ride in the rain - so no flats is more important than knocking 1 minute off my regular ride - but I don't want deadweight marathon pluses either (if I'm riding a seriously rough path I'll take my flatbar with 30c's on it).

Thoughts? I'm considering
- Schwalbe Durano
- Conti Grand Prix GT
- Vredestein Fortezza Quattro Tricomp (if I can find them in 25s)

Don't do it (the gp4s). Im the same height but 6kg lighter than you. Have used the gp4s in both 23 and 25 for ov r several thousand km and theyre both horrendous in terms of puncture and sidewall protection.

Duranos were good however the Vittoria Rubino Pros in 25mm I'm using now are just as good but cheap as chips!

If anyone in Sydney want to test puncture resistance, I invite you to do a full lap of the M5.

I am sorry to hear you didnt go for the gp4000s i have had them for many years and find i an one with the fewest punctures amongst my group, a great training tyre that has plenty of grip, rolls well and you get plenty of wear out of them, over 4000kms out of my last set

There isn't someone in this forum who doesn't have a favorite tyre and one they have just had a bad experience or three with that they will never use it again but I believe the GP4000S is the best all round tyre on the planet and the roads that it isn't handling must be a disgrace. I remember a LBS recommending Bontrager Hard Case for durability but they road like truck tyres and I hated the ride.

How do you go for mileage with them and roughly what do you weigh?
I've had a good run with gp4000s's but ony get ~ 3k km out of a rear. I weigh 75 kg

A few years ago I commuted on the Kyrlion (older version of the Michelin Pro 4 Endurance) for a couple of years. Did the occasional weekend ride as well. I weighed about 90 kgs and I got a couple of years out of them, probably about 3,000 km. A couple of punctures a year.

I switched to Gatorskins for commuting almost two years ago, no punctures yet.

I was using the Michelin Pro Optimum at the moment. I'm down to about 86 kg now. I got about 2,800 km out of them before I cut the rear sidewall last weekend. They are an older model tire, probably a mixture of the Pro Race 3 and the Krylion.

I did run the Pro 4 Endurance for a few hundred kms last summer but destroyed the rear tire when experimenting with lower tire pressures. I keep the front as a spare.

The Pro 4 Service Course seems to be a highly regarded tire. The Kyrlion was as well, although not many people seem to run the newer Endurance model.

Based on tire specs, what I read on the web and my own experience I'd say that compared to a Continental tire the Pro 4 Endurance sits between the Gatorskin and the GP4000.

When my new set of Michelin Pro Optimums wear out I'll either switch to GP 4 seasons or Pro 4 Endurance.

I normally bin them as they're too cut up before this, but last Pro 4 made it to 8000kms.

Putting this out there: Schwable One, especially tubeless. Forget the rest. 23/25/28, and they run large.

I don't know what you are riding over. I have done >30 k km on them and never had to bin one because of cuts.
They wore out apart from a recent one that copped a welding rod through it leaving a big hole in the carcass.
I ride around, not through, bogan confetti and don't live in the city.

That is good mileage from the michy. I might have to try one.

I've decided to ditch my 23mm GP4000s after having loads of punctures on them and a torn wall. Since I fitted them in January I've done 2k on them, almost entirely on sealed roads, and had 7 punctures with them. The wall tear was the last straw - gave me 2 punctures in a kilometre and left me stranded. I'm going for 25mm gatorskins now as they are apparently tougher and less prone to punctures. In fairness the GP4ks ran like a dream when they worked, I just can't be doing with constant punctures.

Made exactly the same switch for exactly the same reasons.

A year on I am yet to puncture a gator, despite commuting on them every day in all weather.

Had a read of the pro4 endurance reviews on wiggle;

"1,000ish miles, 28 cuts on the front tyre, more in the back, numerous slashes and recently punctures galore. These tyres just don't have the "Endurance" the name suggests and debris penetrates too deeply to easily removed, meaning you either hack your tyres to bits yourself or you let it work through and cause further damage.
Currently tossing up between 4000s and Gatorskins. One thing's for sure, I won't be touching these again."

There are other reviews that say similar. So FIIK :?

The two blokes in the posts above this don't like the 4000S and are waxing lyrical about gatorskins. Others like them too.

Tyres are an opinionated subject and we all have them. I'll just stick with the GP4000S I reckon

Well that shows the ramdomness or cuts and puntctures, I've had a pro4 endurance on the back of my fixie commuter for 6 months and only had one puncture

Yep. My rear Pro Optimum before it slashed its sidewall had one (slow) puncture in 2,800 km which resulting in one tiny cut. It had squared off but it was good for another 1,000 km at least.

My old 23 mm Krylions did cut up a lot but the Michelins I've had subsequently have been much better.

I think tire pressure has a huge affect on people's puncture rates. Before I had a proper floor pump I used to puncture my old Krylions 2-3 times a year. When I bought a floor pump and pumped them up to 100 psi I didn't get any more punctures. I've never punctured my 25 mm Gatorskins. I always check the pressure before a morning commute.

I destroyed my rear 23 mm Pro 4 Endurance when experimenting with lower tire pressure on a 23 mm rim. I was riding below 90 psi.
When I punctured my front 25 mm Pro Optimum and put a big cut in it, I was also experimenting with lower pressures. Once again, I was below 90 psi.

Since I've been running 100 psi on the Michelins again I've had one slow puncture and one sidewall failure in about 2,600 subsequent kilometres. The latter occurred while riding the shoulder of the Melba Hwy. It's likely that the courser chip and extra debris on that highway increased the chances of a sidewall tear.

FWIW the average review on Wiggle for the Pro4 Endurance is 4* out 5. GP4000 is 4.7* out of 5, but you still have a few people who cut the sidewall within a few hundred km and swear they are rubbish.

Notice that Conti's pro level tyres use a totally different tread pattern to the GP's

I think that a major factor that might account for tyre durability issues and different personal experiences with the same brand and model is how old the tyre was when purchased and how it was stored at the shop/outlet ie. time from manufacture to use and shelter from UV exposure in storage.
One set of Conti GP4000's lasted me nearly 7000km's, close to twelve months and a different set started to split and perish within 3500km's. Same tyre, different retailer, entirely different experience between batches.
I now always buy tyres from high turnover, large outlets such as Wiggle and hope they haven't been sitting around for too long prior to purchase.
I hope they don't phase out the GP4000's.

So just getting back to GP4Ks vs. GP4KsII, anecdotally the performance difference is very small, not really worth the current ~40% price difference at the moment. If they were below $50 it'd be a little easier to swallow if by chance it suffered 'throw away' damage.

If the 4000S is dropped and it comes to pass that only the S2 is available at a price premium I will swap to schwalbe durano or michy pro 4 endurance. Plenty of options for us :)
