Mud guards for commuting on CX bike

I'm planning on commuting all winter and am looking at buying some mudguards for my CX bike. I'm running disc brakes and 28mm tyres, there seems to be plenty of room. I was lokking at these http://www.this link is broken.au/crud-roadracer ... guard-set/ but they say they are for road bikes, I'm thinking the guard would end up too far away from the tyre on my bike. SKS Chromoplastic P45s should do the trick. If you have a disc CX fork there should be ample clearance.

Zefal Paragon in 35mm is about the neatest option

P45 over P35 for 28mm, the P35's will be ok bit sort of on the limit for coverage.
Do not get the cruds, they are extremely fragile, mine lasted all of 7 days.

I'm liking the Zefel's for price and the fact I can get them with my current Wiggle order I've put togeteher, not ordering for a couple of more weeks.

bump - saw Zefal Paragon 35mm guards in Amart at Chadstone for $14.90 today. Absolute bargain.

That is a bargain. I managed to break my Zefel rear mudguard into 3 pieces when I ran over a particularly nasty "L" shaped stick. Managed to join it back together later on in the week, still works but no longer looks pretty.

I'm not sure you always need to stick with the recommended widths for SKS (or other) guards, having now had three sets on two bikes.

Personally, I think guards looks nicer when they are installed both even distance from the tyre throughout and close to the tyre. I try to get them as close as possible without rubbing, then ease out just a tad to allow for small debris (eg mud!) etc. because the guard is closer there's less room to spray from.

If you do this (it's not easy the first time) you can reduce a lot of the spray and have a narrower guard. I've used p35 on 28mm tyres successfully using this method with both good looks and much dryness. I've also used p45 on 42mm tyres to similar effect. Always slicks, mind.

With the quick releases on the SKS models (and I presume other brands) there's less to worry about in terms of sticks etc getting stuck in your guards than there once was.

I'm not saying this will avoid all possible issues with debris (it won't) but it's a fine compromise in my experience.
