Buying wheels (again) 700c/29 disc

Postby Calvin27 » Fri Mar 28, 2014 4:35 pm

Hello looking for some advice buying wheels for my bike. Here is roughly what I am after:

- 700c/29 size
- 6 bolt disc
- 1800g or less
- 3 cross lacing, 2 might be ok if it is high spoke count
- about 19mm rim width (ID) needs to accommodate 25c
- QR, 135mm rear hub
- no crank brothers crap
- about 28mm rim depth or more
*Edit - Running normal tubes

Looking to spend $500ish. Less if possible. $100 more for each 100g weight saving.

Plan is to use my current wheelset for gravel tyres and chuck the new one on for road riding. My last set of tyres were slow on the road and wore out fast on the gravel.

Try XLR8 with a custom set based on Novatec hubs and a UST rim like Magic XM819. even if you don't go tubeless they are plenty strong enough
Ours is not to reason why...merely to point and giggle

Thanks. I'm not sure if the mavic rim will allow me to comfortably run 25c and give some depth though. Anyhow, I've shot them an email, maybe they've got other ideas.

Thanks Mitchy - These were my go to as well. Any issues running 25c on the 21mm ID?

Haha, I was really tempted with the latest pushys sale. But given my plans, if I had gotten those wheels, I'd end up with a bike so close to mitchy's original flyxii build only 2 years late haha!

ah whoops, i thought crests were 19. personally i'd use them, but you could run a 28mm tyre to be safe.

imitation is the greatest form of flattery. ;) 2014 CB wheels are 21mm+ internal width anyway. i do miss mine though. :(

No. 2-cross and high spoke count do not go together, especially on disc brake wheels. They do not have sufficient tangent to resist rotational flex. You would only consider 2-cross for less than 28 spokes.

I had a thought, but it got run over as it crossed my mind.

A Hope hubs wheel-set from one of the UK bike shops. Might be a bit over $500 with the weaker Aussie Paso.

Internal rim width problem. Happy to be pointed in right direction though.

The only one that is 19mm is the mavic bunch which weight 550g+. Pretty sure that won't get me 1800g.

Found a few (happy to take on comments)

Black flag pro: http://www.this link is broken/au/e ... -prod76175" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
- 1725g $500

Black flag expert: http://www.this link is broken/au/e ... -prod76176" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
- 1895g $390

Both 19mm id (man is that a hard specification to find or what!). Not happy about the lack of rim depth, I guess I'll sleep on it.

Main issue I have had with Sun Ringle wheels is a tendency for noodleness out of the box. They benefit from further tweaking which makes them not quite the bargain they seem to be.

I am not far off doing the same investigation and am tending towards a custom effort based on either Hope or Phil Wood hubs and proper UST (so not Stan's) rims. No need for a narrow 19mm rim though as the smallest tyres these rims are ever likely to see are 32C and in the first off they'll be 29x2.2.

Buying wheels (again) 700c/29 disc

Postby queequeg » Sun Mar 30, 2014 1:46 pm

I still have a pair of Handspun Stans Crest/SRAM X9 29er Disc wheels (32h) hanging in the garage. They came with my CX bike and I couldn't get any standard 700c tyre to fit the rims, including the CX tyres that came with them! Pity, because they are incredibly light wheels (not so much if you add an 740g tyre to each wheel).
I bought the parts for a new wheel set about 18 months ago but have not had the time to build them (Mavic Open Pro with Hope Pro 2 EVO, 36h, rear hub is a 10mm bolt through).

You will find it next to impossible to get 25mm on those Crest rims, trust me.
28mm will go on, but your fingers may be shredded by the end of the ordeal ;)

I'd investigate the route of: H+SON Archetype rims, rev/comp/race/laser spokes & Asian hubs. That should be in the 1600's, 1700 max range even with 32/32h.

I couldn't even fit the 35mm CX tyres I had onto the crest rim. I nearly lost my fingers trying a 28mm tyre, which was a dismal failure.

Yep I think 19mm is the max I'd go for my purposes. The other problem I'm having is the rim depth. most are 20mm which are ok for MTB tyres but with 25c it just looks strangely skinny. It's even worse with the rims that have more square edges. This is proving to be a difficult challenge. I'm thinking I should wait it out a bit more for some road disc wheels to come out - otherwise there are these mavix tn719 rims on hope hubs!

Giving this one a bump. Sort of an FYi for anyone looking for a cheap light (strong haha?) wheelset. Also if any has experience with these, please share.

I've done a lot of late night internet crawling and found these:

http://www.kinesisbikes.co.uk/products/ ... ght-cxdisc

$400 here:
http://www.probikekit.com.au/bicycle-wh ... pQodpQoApQ

I am slowly conceding that the deeper rim is increasingly impossible to find for a factory wheelset. The only one I can find are Reynolds Stratus elite (AT)$400 (2.1kg!) or the more expensive version at $1000.

deeper rims are inherently going to be heavier and more expensive.

my LB carbon 45mm clinchers come in around 1600 grams on light disc hubs with aero spokes.
