Hi,
I'd like to buy a second hand road bike. I would use for commuting and some recreational rides as well (probably not very long). I'm happy to put 300-500$ in it to get good stuff (and light).
I saw two bikes today, 400$ each, one is Avanti Corsa 2006, the other Merida road race 2010. They are both good for my size, in (very) good shape globally (I gave a try) except maybe one or two scuffs; nothing serious. Would you have any advice on these bicycles? Does one appear better than the other to you? As for me I found the Avanti very very good and light (carbon frame); should I be afraid of being ripped off here? Or maybe the age explains the low price for a carbon frame? (the seat has been changed and is lousy but it's not a big deal for me) The same bike is visible here: http://bicyclingaustralia.com.au/classifieds/m/c1184" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; The gear system is still ultegra on the one I saw, I guess it's important.
I'm not a pro, but I'd like something to climb hills (rather) easily and that holds in time. I have an old Repco right now and it weighs a lot.
Thanks for any help!

I rode an Avanti Corsa for a couple of years. They are a very good bike. I was very sad when I had to retire it.

Thanks cowled. Would you say that 400$ is a normal price for this?

IIRC, the Corsa was about $2, 500 new. I paid $600 to buy mine off a mate.

Pretty sure that the Avanti is not full carbon. I have the Corsa Pro Elite of similar vintage and it still just has the rear stays and fork in carbon, rest of the frame is in triple butted alu. They are very nice bike to ride and extremely light even when considering its age and material used. You will need to pay special attention around the joints between the carbon stays and the alu frame as galvanic corrosion can happen between the carbon and alloy given its age.

+1, I had a 2008 Corsa and it only had CF fork and seat/chain stays. Good bike until it developed a crack at the down tube/BB weld just inside the 5 yr warranty. Can happen to any alu frame though, I had about 16000km on mine at the time of the crack.systema83 wrote:Pretty sure that the Avanti is not full carbon.
