I'm a big fan of Time RXS Carbon.... Light, low stack height and adjustable Q factor.

First question for anyone should be...why? What don't you like about what you have?

[pedant on] By the by...I assume you are talking about R540 pedals but you should be aware there are also M540 pedals so being a tad more specific wouldn't hurt [pedant off]
Ours is not to reason why...merely to point and giggle

Are there any real differences between the shimano pedals apart from weight (R540 vs 105 etc)?

R550 & better pedals have a wider platform than R540 (same cleat though, so if your current ones are in good shape you can still use & kep the ones that come withthe pedals as spares until you need to replace the cleats), which improves the stability of your feet on the pedals. They do also get lighter, and also better bearings as you go up the ranks too.
I had a thought, but it got run over as it crossed my mind.

This is a little confusing as the OP does not specify if the upgrade is from R540 or M540 so I am unsure if we are talking road or MTB peddles here.

I don't know much about peddles but got Look Keo Classics http://www.lookcycle.com/en/us/route/pe ... assic.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; for my new road bike simply because they were lighter than any other offering at the shop. I have only done around 600 kms on them but complaints so far.

Regards,
Ken
