Actually never ridden... BNWT.
“What happened next is that the team car tried to get recover position and get up to him, passing all the other team cars in doing so. The road was really narrow and the second bike on the roof ended up touching those on the Belkin team car. It was going pretty fast and the frame broke on top of the roof due to the impact”

I'm highly dubious of Specialized's current claim. The bikes or part of the Belkin car struck would first have to pass the front wheel before impacting the downtube, would it not - and where is the smashed up Bianchi? Also, why is there a race number on this so-called 'spare' bike???

Hmmm.......

In all reality, Contador crashed hard enough to break his leg, so would it be all that bad for PR if he also broke his frame in the crash???

Going by Velonews there are at least four "explanations" and I think this one has now been replaced by a later one ...

Beat me to it but I typed it out anyway... Specialized current claim is that it had been run over, this was proved to be false.
Read all about it here;
http://velonews.competitor.com/2014/07/ ... ash_336328
A couple of points to note;
- The bike is not dirty, suggesting it was never ridden, especially in the inclement conditions of stage 10
- Contador's mechanic often puts a number on his spare bike

Edit: as can be seen in this article, the bike he crashed has a different livery to the broken one.

This will baffle conspiracy theorists out there.The next thing you need to be aware about is the impending legal gag note issued by Specialized about any negativity you heard from social media and other media sources.

I think its not unreasonable that the story was unclear initially - it wasn't captured on camera, the scene was chaotic with other riders and team cars all over the place and exactly what had happened to Berty was unclear - Liggett and Sherwin initially called it as happening on an uphill before changing their minds to state that he's skidded over 100 metres on the downhill. The Bianchi team driver corroborated the cars colliding story and the image above clearly shows Contador was not riding the broken up bike. Case closed.

I'm pretty sure that's Nicolas Roche's Maclaren tarmac, not the bike Contador crashed on.

For the record, I think the broken one above is too clean to have been ridden (and I own an s-works tarmac)

Tinkoff-Saxo’s team captain Alberto Contador has abandoned Tour de France following a hard crash on stage 10. Contador crashed on the descent of Petit Ballon, while positioned in the peloton. Team Manager Bjarne Riis explains:

“Alberto crashed on a fast and straight part of the descent. He was reaching for his pocket and the bike was swept away under him probably because of a bump or hole in the road. Alberto was in the shape of his life and the entire team had our eyes fixed on the podium in Paris and the work we would have to do to get there”.

Following the crash Alberto received medical treatment to stop the bleeding from his knee.

“After the crash, Alberto got back on the bike and we tried for about 18 kilometers to keep him in the race. Despite his best efforts and an impressive show of willpower, he had to abandon the race”, says Bjarne Riis after the stage.

The captain of Tinkoff-Saxo was brought to the finish line in a team car and underwent medical examinations with x-rays being taken of the areas affected.

“Alberto has broken his tibia just below the knee. It’s not a complicated fracture but it probably requires surgery. He will stay with us tonight and tomorrow he will travel back to Madrid to undergo further examinations and a surgery if necessary”, adds Bjarne Riis.

Alberto Contador’s exit is a tragic event also taken the many months of preparation into consideration together with the work that the team has done leading up to and during this year’s Tour de France.

“We will naturally have to look ahead. But right now it’s to early to say anything about the possibility of Alberto riding Vuelta a Espana. It depends on his recovery and on how fast he can get back on the bike and start training again”, concludes Bjarne Riis.

Spesh trying to destroy evidence after realising that Bertie wouldn't be needing the yellow unit this year?

Yes, I saw that pic, and also the bike the mechanic picked up after Bertie got going again (the one behind him in the pic above) - it was a very plain bike, not team issue, which leaves me wondering if Contador was riding a prototype ultra-lightweight bike for the big day in the hills.

The orange and black bike pictured a few posts up is the Mclaren S-works Tarmac. Nicolas Roche is riding it in the tour. He gave the bike to Contador immediately after the crash so he could get going again. He rode about 1km on it before having to stop for medical attention hence it been on the side of the road.

Poor old Bertie... I reckon he could have taken some steam out of Nibali up that final climb yesterday.
