tire upgrade, how wide you reckon I can go?

Postby tron07 » Fri Jul 18, 2014 12:17 pm

My Reid Osprey bike came with this Kenda 700 x 23c tires which is quite lousy, thinking maybe of changing to some other tires, perhaps even slightly wider, not sure what is the max width it will fit. Wheelset/Rim are Alex DA16 Double Wall Alloy.

There's a chart at Sheldon Brown's site http://sheldonbrown.com/tire-sizing.html#width" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

It's spelt "tyres". Your spelling is American.

I have the same bike, you might be able to fit some 25s, but I doubt any bigger than that. Probably best sticking with 23s.

Google will give you the rim width - in this case DA16 are 16mm

My bike came stock with DA16s and 28mm tyres. Reckon a 32 wouldn't be a problem either.

Don't forget to check for frame clearance.

You won't fit bigger than 28mm. Depending on frame clearance it could be less. Any bigger and the tyres will be rubbing on the bodies of the brake calipers.
I had a thought, but it got run over as it crossed my mind.

The limiting factor will not be rim width but frame clearance. Look betwee the fork and seatstays/chainstays. I suspect that 25mm will be the max

http://www.cyclehire.com.au/mens-1.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; is selling a XDS CX280 which uses the same wheel and it has 38mm tyres fitted. I know it's a different frame, but the point is that 38mm will fit.

the rim will very rarely affect the tyre size. my CX wheels have had 2.25" mtb tyres and 23mm road tyres on them. both rode perfectly fine and aren't trying to pull off the bead.

Looking at the online pic of the bike I reckon it will 25's max. I bought some 28's to fit on my old roadie and they didn't fit under the frame or front fork.
