Need new entry level wheels, help!! Campy Ventos?

Postby digbyj » Wed Jul 23, 2014 8:59 pm

Hi Folks,
After some great assistance on here actually getting into road biking I think I'm ready for some new wheels.
I bought a cheap Trek 1500 slr last year that had clearly done a lot of kms but has been serving me well, but clearly is showing signs of aging.
I am having issues braking and lbs mentioned that my rims maybe worn as couldn't see any issues with the brakes. Some independent research by myself has discovered some concaving of the rims which leads me to believe it may be time I got rid of them.
This being the case and cutting a long story short, what do I get?
My budget is to $300, ideally less. I ride around 100kms a week, but am hoping to increase this to 200kms as my baby (actual baby not my mountain bike!) gets a little bit older. I weigh around 67kg and it is quite hilly where I live.
Clubhouse leader is a set of Campy Vento Reactions. I can get these at a great price but am hearing mixed reviews about G3 lacing, which is the spoke pattern.
Would love to hear your feedback particularly on the Campys as I have them in my shopping cart right now!
Cheers,
Marcus

If you're handy with a spanner check out the BDOP DIY alloy kits - will come in just under $300 once you buy a wheel truing jig.

Else, Campagnolo Sirocco 35s are solid, and so are the vento reactions. Might be worth waiting a few months, as the Fulcrum racing 5 (same wheel as the vento but different label) is being updated for 2015 - it'll have a wider rim which will ride smoother! If the Fulcrum racing 5s are being upgraded you can expect the same from the Ventos.

Thanks for the response. That building site looks interesting but I think I'll pass.
I think I might just get the Ventos, they just look so strange that I hope they work! They look different to the Fulcrum 5's by the way.
Cheers

If you are on a tight budget then I'd recommend avoiding Campagnolo altogether. Cassettes are generally expensive. Grab a pair of Shimano WR-500 or 501 and use their cassettes. I think these wheels are on special at Cells for 129 (110 on Wiggles). They're bullet (nuke?) proof. If you're running Campagnolo 10s then it should be fine with Shimano 10s cassettes. Purists will say you'll get a few occasional skips but these are not that noticeable. Well not to the point that will bother you.

BTW I ran Sirrico on my 105 setup. G3 lacing on both front & back and had no dramas even after numerous crashes. To come to think of it, I never had to true it ever! They were secondhand (not sure how old) and I've used them for commuting for over 3 years.

Thanks for the advice there, so why avoid the Campys if the price is right and it is shimano compatible?

I personally stay away from anything that has proprietary spokes- snap them and not only are they expensive but availability can be a struggle. Campag wheels fall solidly into this category.

Prolites are a good option- at your weight the Braccianos are excellent but outside your price range $450 shipped I believe. The Merano A30's are also a good option from Prolite $319 plus shipping).

Just buy the Campagnolo and enjoy. I think you've already made up your mind :)

Haha yeah I have kind of made up my mind but there does seem to be a negative side to them. I can get some Fulcrum 7's for about the same price. So it's now 7's vs Vento's...

I'm now leaning towards the Fulcrum 7's to take away any concerns with G3 geometry. Hmmm.
That bobd website is interesting too.

You could get the current 2014 Fulcrum 5's for under $300

This is hilarious, had pretty much woken up and decided the Ventos with strange spokes, but can't quite get over this bdop option do have sent another email to them.
I may never end up getting wheels, too difficult!

Get the ventos. They've had the G3 lacing out for a while now, if it was no good you would have heard about it. Mine have been fine (khamsin and vento).

I would be saving up some extra dollars and buying either Braccianos or Fulcrum Racing 3's.

I just bought a set of 3's from Bikebug for $391 delivered. Very happy with the wheels so far.

I chose the Fulcrums over the Braccianos because I've had Braccianos before and wanted to try something different. Both are top quality wheel sets and you can't really go wrong with either of them.

I have Fulcrum R5, R3 and 2 x R1 and have found all to be fantastic. I'm over a ton, so cannot complain about their reliability either.

I'm riding my Fulcrum R5s on one bike at the moment, as I recently changed to an 11-speed freehub for one set of R1s and haven't really been fussed about changing them back over. I've found the R5s to be only moderately slower / less dynamic than the R1s. I've raced on them and also done some quick Beach Rd runs - they cope no problems and are very well priced around the $300 mark, so well worth considering.

You're 67kg, snapping spokes is least of your concern!

I ride Campy Zondas with the G3 lacing. Kitted up I'm not far off 100kg and I've never had any problems.

Alright I'm about to checkout with the Ventos, can anyone tell me if I'll need a spacer?
I have a 10 speed 105 cassette currently.
It's only $3 but f I do need it, wanna make sure it's the right one!

I bought some Scirroco 35's early this year, they came with the required 9/10 spacer.Though you still need to use the cassette-supplied spacer as well.

Wheels arrived and installed, I used 1 spacer but not sure if I need 2?
The back wheel is slightly out of true (bummer) so have contacted wiggle but probably easier for me just to get it trued. I'll get the spacer checked at same time.
Most importantly it has fixed my brake issue, result!!!
Now to focus on my baby transporting bike... And of course some riding!!
Yeeeehaaaawwww!

Big ups to Wiggle, they are paying for the wheels to be trued.
Great service.

Indeed, great service - make sure you find a shop that knows what it's doing though!

Sometimes a wheel might have a minor wobble but have all spoke tensions equal - this is MUCH better than having a perfectly straight wheel with uneven tensions. There usually is slight hop around the rim joint.

Found a great shop in Surrey Hills actually, he's now my new mechanic!
Said if it's bent it's bent but got a text saying he got it sorted.
I sent a couple of videos of the wheels on the truing machine to Wiggle at their request.
Will pick up tomoro, wheels will end up costing around $60.
Again, my goal out of all this was to fix brakes which has worked so I am stoked!
