Pimp my ride - new wheels suggestions

Postby cjrich » Thu Jul 24, 2014 11:26 am

Hi all

Firstly, apologies for yet another wheel thread, I know there are dozens already

Anyway! I was recently considering upgrading to a new bike but still enjoying the look and ride of my 2009 Avanti Cadent 1.0 so I'll hang onto it for a while longer.

I would like to jazz it up with some new good looking wheels though. Looking at something a bit aero-ish (35-50mm deep) but not too heavy, would like to do some not so serious hill work, so similar weight to my current Fulcrum 5s which have served me well. Carbons would be nice, but decent ones are probably over my budget.

Asking for suggestions on clincher wheelsets under $1000. Perhaps Shimano RS81 C35?

I'm 68kg and don't race.

Cheers

I wouldn't be too bothered by getting the deep aero wheels if you are doing hills. But yeah think you are on the right track with the Shimano's if that's what you want. Think I'd be going for the Dura Ace 9000 C24 if I were doing hills for about $900.

Or these at nearly half the price!

If you decide to go with the C24's, Cycling Express sent out an email a couple weeks back advertising them for $825 on sale.
Was probably around a fortnight ago from memory, so the offer may have expired.

If the offer is still available, with a little bit of prudent buying, you might be able to get wheels, new tyres and tubes for around the $900 mark.

I like your original choice of the RS81 C35. I have DA9000 C24s myself, and they are a great wheel, but the C35s will look cooler (which seems what you after), and you will not notice 200g difference on a hill unless you are racing with attacks etc.

I have to say that the weight of wheels effect on climbing is over exaggerated. I have wheels ranging from about 1380g with light rims to over 2000g. I can feel the difference in acceleration, and I like the light wheels for a tight crit where you are standing accelerating out of tight corners (and for a punchy sprint), but for constant tempo hill climbing (so wheels stay at same speed), I can't pick a difference. The difference in weight of the wheels is less than the difference in weight between a full and empty water bottle. I could blind test my light wheels vs heavy within seconds of hopping on the bike from feel as I accelerate, but I could not tell the difference doing constant 22-25kph up a 5% climb.
