If you buy online from a US store, the helmet wont have the Australian safety sticker, so while the helmet might meet Australian standards from a technical legal viewpoint its not compliant.

Have read lately (forget where) that the fit of the helmet is important for the safety, so highly recommend that you pay the extra and buy the helmet in the local bike shop

I’m looking to get a helmet. Looks like it’s cheaper to get online from the U.S. than from a local shop. I understand helmets need to be fitted properly. I am thinking of going to the shop to get my proper size and then buy online. Does bike helmet comes in standard sizes like S, M and L or do they differ from brand to brand.

I agree this is a pretty horrendous offence in manners . If you need the assistance of your local store, pay them for it (i.e. by buying the item from the store). If you want to buy online, do your research, buy wisely and take the risk. What do you do for work? Whatever it is, I'm sure you can put yourself in a similar position where someone could shamelessly rip you off, and essentially take away your money, job and livelihood. It's not very nice is it? Don't get me wrong, I buy a lot online...but I don't use my LBS as a fitting store.

Size wise helmets are not hard to buy for. They generally come with an adjustable strap giving about 5cm of adjustment. The size (S,M,L) will usually also indicate the size range. i.e. Large - something like 56-60cm. Get a measuring tape, measure the circumference of your head. Buy a helmet that your head will fit in that range. But if you want to try a few on and really get a feel for them, then go to your local store AND buy it from your local store.

+1 to the shape my work mate and I have about the same head diameter - he has a specialised lid (that would not fit my head with comfort as it is too round) and I have a Met lid (that wouldn't fit him as it is too oval)

Also seeing we all are required to wear them (no MHL debate please) wouldn't you rather have one you both liked the look of and was comfortable than one that just might be. I buy items for cycling online but when it comes to protecting my last two brain cells I want to know that it fits and will do the job comfortably. Gloves are the other safety item that I only purchase in-store as well.

On line is risky, I have been stung.

Also, buying a helmet on line without a AS sticker is legally like wearing a helmet that the law sees as the same as a peaky cap. Basically, your not wearing a helmet.

Okay, say you don't care, how will a copper tell from a distance, thats fine until your in a accident. Then it comes out you helmet was illegal! All the reports, media coverage, etc will say you were not wearing helmet. How do you think this might effect your case or reflect on all cyclists. Cyclists have enough trouble trying to prove their right as it is now, let alone giving them an out.

And really how much do you save on a helmet. Shop around australia, you can get specials here too.

On the legality of the helmet, aside from potentially being fined and not being able to compete, the other main implication is that in the unfortunate situation of an accident, insurance may decline to pay part or all if they show that you were negligent by not wearing an approved helmet.

Buy one from Aldi next time they are on sale. They are usually only about $18, have passed exactly the same Australian standard safety tests as that $250 Giro helmet you've been admiring and have the Australian standards sticker inside to prove it, they are very light and if you don't like it you have 60 days to return it for a full refund. Best value helmets going.

My aldi helmet is a backup. It is slightly the wrong shape for my head, but it's better than wearing a helmet with wet padding/straps.

Great advise..... Don't have to be a rocket scientist to buy a helmet online..... Don't do what someone did to me and run a metal tape measure around his head and wonder why it wasn't accurate.... run a piece of string/material around your head and then lay it down on a table and measure it...
