Sourcing a Surly ECR, Rohloff from USA
Postby Fisher44 » Sat Aug 09, 2014 7:48 pm
I am looking into ordering a Surly ECR with Rohloff hub from LA or thereabouts - I'm going to visit my son who lives in LA soon and intend to bring a bike back home with me after touring some back mountain territory for awhile - can anyone refer me to a decent, reliable bike shop or similar to approach in LA or somewhere else on the west coast? cheers

Not sure you'll get much action with this thread on here since most of us are in Australia - I'd try either an American forum (or more international) or even lean on your son a bit to do some leg work before you arrive. If you're planning on riding shortly after arriving, it would be nice to grab your preferred bike immediately rather than having to wait for it to be ordered in.

Another thing to add here though - the closest decent bike shops to me are in Adelaide and one of the things that got me thinking to buy in the States when I get there has been the totally lousy service/attention that I have received from a couple of bike shops here. Almost as if you don't put down your money when your'e in the shop they forget about you! Never mind that they didn't have the right bike in stock anyway!
So, it really makes you think why buy local when their not real interested anyway! Go figure !
I wouldn't run a business that way - specially when i'm guessing not too many are after a bike in the middle of a South Aussie winter!

Another very good reason why you should BYO (build your own).

I don't have the expertise to BYO at present but I have found a brilliant guy here in Adelaide who is a former pro rider and proof bike mechanic that now runs his own show from home re builds, repairs - so I am confident that whatever I want that he also considers wise will end up as a quality build - working in with a guy like this sure releases me from the retail shop service hassles - Cheers

These guys are pretty good. Bought some stuff off them whilst in town last year.
Friendly, know what's going on and have a good workshop.

Hi Fisher44
You can find this list of dealers on their site or give them a call for what is current. I have Emailed Surly in the past and always received a good response.

The good ol' USA is not such a great place to go sourcing a Rohloff. Most of them have never even heard of the hub. Best prices will be had from German sites like bike24 and Starbike.
