Best road tyre all round

Postby booge » Sat Aug 30, 2014 9:27 pm

I'm needing new road tyres at the moment. I've had Continental - Attack/force, gp4000 etc and am very happy with the puncture resistance and performance. However, surely other tyres out there would be pretty close to their performance. Lots of good specials at the moment on road tyres and wanted other peoples opinions on what they ride/swear by. Is TPI everything as far as puncture resistance? Conti's are way higher than others except Vittoria Open corsa Evo cx in that department.

I'm liking my pro 4 endurance at the moment. Durano and gp4000S are also good.

Nothing to do with it. More, finer, threads = more supple casing. But manufacturers lie and add the plies together to get silly high numbers. Three layers of 120 =/ 360 tpi casing.

I ordered a replacement pair of Durano Plus this morning. Wiggle have them for a good price at the moment.

I am pretty happy with them resonably light for good puncture resistance.

There is no such thing as the best. They all have different strengths and weaknesses, and some of that will come down to the roads and riding that you do. It's very unusual for me to get a flat and I don't use particularly heavy tyres on the good bike. I have gotten good results from my Bontrager R3 clinchers, although it's only on the front tyre because the rear was slashed really really badly quite soon after putting it on. Strange but true!

I've found the best all round tyres for me are Michelin Pro 4 Service Course & Vredestein Fortezza Tricomp.

You say 'all round'. Quite a broad net. Highly personal, but here goes...

Michelin Pro 3/4: great riding tyres, smooth, fast, but awful for getting tread and sidewall cuts
Vittoria Rubino: nice balance of speed and strength, great in dry and good in wet, but can suffer tread cuts from rough stuff
Vittoria Zaffiro: sturdy, a little slower, solid in wet or dry
Serfas Seca RS: again, nice balance between speed and strength, not so prone to cuts as the Rubino
Conti GP: great in the dry, awful in the wet

YMMV 8)

I like Challenge Parigi Roubaix. Fast and comfy. Run them soft and you won't get punctures and be faster on chip seal.

Vittoria Rubino Pro III. They are not as fast as the pure race tyres but an excellent training tyre (or all rounder). Good puncture resistance (better than Continental Gatorskins), roll reasonably well and fine in the wet. Inexpensive at around $27 and I get roughly 5,000km life.

As others have said it's hard to say one tyre is the best. My opinions on tyres I have ridden are below.

GP4000s = Very good
Rubino Pro (various versions) = Very good but not quite as supple as the GP4000s
Schwalbe Ultremo = Never again. Side wall and roundness issues.
Pro4 Service Corse = Nice, fast but not very durable.
Bontrager R3 = Currently my tyre of choice, nice ride quality, lots of grip and they are as good or better in terms of cut as the GP4000s.

I really want to try Veloflex and Challenge at some stage.

Cheers
Dave.

Veloflex are awesome but they don't make a fat tyre. The 25mm is more a 23.5mm after stretching on the wheel.

Conti 4000s 25mm for one tire.

Maxxis Re-Fuse 25 or 28mm folding for high mileage/commuting strength.

Specialized Armadillo Elite 25 or 28mm folding for high mileage/commuting strength.

Ive never had a drivers license. Used around a 100 different models of tires in the last 17 years road riding and these 3 stand out the most.

If you are not riding 25mm tires yet, you are missing out.

That's why for our ancestors the square wheel was such an improvement over triangular - one less bump. :D

I've been using Schwalbe Durano S on my 20 inch foldie over about 500-600km and not a single puncture and rolls rather fast. I run them at 110 psi. I'm probably gonna use them again when the time comes. Recommended.

Don't you mean one 'more' (smaller) bump?

However, see also "solids of constant width" :-)

[edit: granted, they'll only work as rollers, not axled wheels]

Amongst my crowd of racers, audax types, and commuters.
Their distilled view:

weight guidelines for 23mm (and 25mm) tires.
<190g for racing only. heavily compromised puncture resistance and durability.
190-230g good all rounders
230+ durability will be a main feature.
280+ ultimate durability and puncture resistance.

Durability

Maxxis Re-Fuse Kevlar 62A 280g, aud30
Specialized Armadillos 285g, aud40
Vredestein Fiammente DuoComp 290g, aud19

Performance & Durability

Conti GP4000s 205g, aud36
Conti Gatorskin 220g, aud35
Vredestein Fortezza Senso All weather Super Lite 195g, aud43
Vredestein Fortezza Senso All Weather 225g, aud33
Vredestein Fortezza Quattro Tricomp 230g, aud30

Vredestein Fortezza Quattro Tricomp are an exceptionally good tyre. They are hard to find though and I'm not sure if they are still being produced as I think Vredestein has been taken over and their manufacturing might also have moved?

I know the current crop of new models look very different to the old ones (as in, look like they are coming out of a different factory).
