Please suggest what wheels would make a nice upgrade?

Postby denwol » Sat Sep 13, 2014 4:05 pm

Hi,

I have a 2007 Gitane Mach2200 that I enjoy riding. I do about 200km/week and average about 25-28km/hr depending on the day and how many hills on the route I choose.
I weigh about 105kg.
I have a set of H Plus Son TB-14s on 105 hubs.
These were quite cheap and they feel nice, but I have never had anything else so can't really compare it to anything.
How do these compare to Fulcrum 5s or similar shop wheels?
Would I get any sought of performance increase by changing hubs?
What wheels do you suggest would give a noticeable improvement in performance?
Budget $400-600
Thanks

I'm about the same weight as you, I use these:

http://www.this link is broken.au/campagnolo-zon ... -wheelset/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Noticably better than Fulcrum 7 and not much different to Fulcrum 0 I recon. Good tough wheels, same as Fulcrum 3 pretty much but normally about $50 cheaper. If you shop around you can get them for under $400.

Shoot me down ... but denwol, what you have there is a good wheelset. Changing wheels does nothing for performance except in your head. Not sure why you want better performance anyway. Unless you go to carbon tubbies like a Zipp 404 or something you wont notice a thing, and even then it would be minor.
I know everyone bangs on about wheels but I can name a number of A grade racing cyclists and NRS riders who use wheels like Fulcrum 7s or Mavic Equipes. Sure if you can pick up an upgrade cheap then grab it but don't think that different wheels will make any noticeable difference.
If you're gonna toss the 105's can I have first dibs please?

I agree with all 3 of those posts. I have a set if Campy Zondas and a set of Shimano Dura Ace C24s and they are both great wheelsets ( and I'm 100kgs).

But I also agree with Derny about your current wheels not being too shabby and its more "the engine" thats important.

But hey I'd still buy a nice new set and have fun comparing (and brag that you have a spare set) :-)

Edit: I've got 5 bikes and an extra 3 spare wheelsets so I'm tipping you are due for something new.. .:lol:
( sorry couldn't help myself)

Btw keep an eye out on the market place here on BNA some great and cheap wheelsets come up from time to time.
I've picked up my zondas and C24s from here actually!

I agree- and the TB14 rims look great and the 105 hubs roll well and are super reliable- you would have to send up big to get even a small improvement- enjoy the current wheelset- when it gets past its use by date then think about what else is out there (BTW I am using H Plus Son Archetypes and love them)

Just comparing prices. Your old set would be an older version of these I'm guessing...

http://www.this link is broken.au/h-plus-son-arc ... -wheelset/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

And the Zondas are cheaper but I'd say pretty much on par with your current set..

http://www.this link is broken.au/campagnolo-zon ... -wheelset/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Food for thought.

Thanks for the responses.
As I said, I have nothing to compare mine with and since I got mine very cheaply, and they are quite heavy (like me) I wasn't sure what I really have. There are no real comparisons on the web that I could find.
Rodneycc, my wheels are a little different in that mine are square 23mm rims. I think your right though, just one of those n+1 things maybe. The Zondo's do look nice :lol:

Just did a quick ggogle of the TB14s- they weigh in at 490grams each which is an acceptable weight for a rim especially if you are on the larger size. Most of the "excess" weight is in the 105 hubs which is good as this means less rotating mass (ie the rim). I like the classic look of the TB14s also.

I think this is the first time I've ever seen anyone overcome the upgraditis bug.
I thought it was a chronic disease. Must be superior genes and common sense at work.
How refreshing. :D

C24's are excellent. Noticed a difference between them and the fulcrum 3's that were on my bike.
I also bought some fulcrum zeros, and again, definitely nicer that the 3's.
That said, the 3's are an excellent wheel unto themselves. I have kept the 3's as my spares, sold the c24'a and I ride the Zeros.
I am happy with my purchases.
Loving my Merida's and working towards adding a Pinarello to the stable... Go go go...

Treat yourself to some really good 320 tpi tyres. Brown sidewall veloflex masters look great on TB14 rims.

That seems like a good idea. Should I go 23 or 25s? Any real difference?

Checkout the Pro-Lite Bracciano A42's. They'd be perfect for you. I'd recommend 25mm tyres at 10psi less pressure than you run with 23mm tyres.

If you don't agree they were a good upgrade after a month, send them back and I'll refund your money.

If you get a chance to ride on some "better(i.e more expensive)" wheels, then take them for a spin. I would run 115kgs and needed something 'strong". I have a set of TWE 38mm ali clincher wheels on my bike and have ridden them back to back with the other wheels i own, some Velocity deep V rims/ultegra hubs. The TWE wheels are noticeably stiffer and especially on the hills, just seem less resistant to progress than the Velocitys(same tyres, tubes and pressures). The velocitys can just feel like they wallow a bit under pressure and they are 36 spoke, so should be strong.

Maybe one of these days i'll ride the same route and see if there really is a time/speed difference, or if its all in the head and me trying to justify the upgraditis.

Love the Veloflex on my TB14s. These are 23s - they are quite plush anyway because of the wide rim and supple sidewalls, but if you can fit 25s I would suggest those.
