commuter light

Postby jamesn184 » Sat Sep 13, 2014 7:42 pm

I'm looking to get a new headlight that will suit my new requirements which will be:
1) Roughly 12km spent riding along a highway at night with zero roadside lighting
2) USB rechargeable
3) Has multiple modes (inc. flashing mode)
4) Under $200

I have the 500 lumen version of this light for commuting http://www.this link is broken/Moon-X-Powe ... ront-Light" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;. It's been great, easy to take on and off the bike and (for me) plenty of light on unlit paths/road. If you wanna step it up another level this is meant to be quite good http://www.evanscycles.com/products/cat ... t-ec052625" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Moon X Power 1000

very nice

EDIT just noticed you wanted usb: not USB but very good heat sink design and ventilation which makes for a very steady output.

Cateye Volt300. Don't worry about the fact it only produces 300 lumens (although 349 in test). It's an excellently shaped beam with no hotspots, that has plenty of throw and a good selection of modes. The battery is replaceable which is handy as it's the first thing that wears out on any light. Mounting system dead easy and removable in 20 seconds. You could buy two and still come in way under your budget.

The supernova airstream is only a little over your budget and has the functions you require.

They are decently bright, but the beam isn't friendly to oncoming traffic.

Go for a dyno light, you wont regret it. I run mine all the time, day and night.

I have a cheap dyno wheel like the one listed, it does the job, but you can spend more and get a smaller hub with QR and less drag.

+1
I've personally had a gut full of stupidly bright unshaped beams coming the other way :x
More lumens does not mean better vision, if it is unshaped and has a central hot spot that constricts the pupil, as most of them do :roll:
