Modern steel road bikes?

Postby HamSandwich » Tue Sep 16, 2014 2:23 am

Who makes a modern steel road/cross available in Aus?

I know Surly do, and gather Charge did (no longer available?) - anybody else? I'd love something tough that doesn't cost the earth.

Off the top of my head (although you will have limited dealerships for some of these): Surly, Salsa, Kona, Jamis, Specialized (AWOL), Viviente.

Thanks guys.

Any thoughts on the bikes themselves? I'm leaning towards the Surly Straggler at the moment, but they're not the cheapest things.

Never ridden any of them. The Straggler looks good though as a really adaptable all rounder. The equivalent would be a Spesh AWOL or Salsa Vaya 2 but these have a different geometry.

I have a Steel Jamis Eclipse custom build- it is a really nice ride and looks great. It is a dedicated road bike, not an allrounder/cross/tourer but is exceptionally comfy and fast. Jamis has other steel bikes at most price points and have a bit of a cult following. Also easier to source if you are anywhere in Aus other than WA.

That's a nice looking bike. I had a look at their site but couldn't find steel frames, only carbon and ally. Is there a seller in Aus that has a web site I could check out?

Well if you're considering that, then maybe the Kaffenback 2 might suit you. Neither local, or cheap. But probably significantly cheaper importing that than buying a Straggler locally. I have the frameset which I built up after my Surly Cross Check cracked at the top tube.

Soma bikes and frames are also available locally, depending on where you live. The entire range is steel, I think.

The other options mentioned are worth considering too.

I have a Soma Double Cross.

I am in shock  Jamis may have ditched the eclipse for 2015, They still have the Quest and the Bosanova though

The Eclipse is to me a lot of what makes Jamis a great bike manufacturer- better than any specialdale follow the trends company anyway.

Cheers for that. Another option to add to the list.

Colossi is another frame only option, I bought mine through Gear Brisbane but there are other distributors across Aus.

I like it - good wheels as well :-)

Can you post a new pic with the white bartape?

If you're prepared to buy from overseas and you are after steel then Genesis and Condor are always worth a look.

Not good enough anymore - still available but the team race bike is now carbon. But unlikely to be in the OP's price range.

Worth looking at Masi Bikes...the CX, CX Comp or CXGR, or for a something a little more upmarket the Gran Criterium.

The CXGR is the new Masi gravel grinder...

All worthwhile bikes to consider. For mine there is an aesthetic fail in most of them ie the preponderance of spacers instead of a slightly longer head tube. Obviously not a disincentive for many buyers but if choosing to go custom it is easily addressed.

But the OP said "doesn't cost the earth", so custom is probably out of scope. :)

Where are you based, OP?

If you are in Perth, there is Jonesman. Not a hell of a lot of detail on the net, but you'll get to see some if his frames and some links to here and other cycling forums. He owns a local bike store, but still produces his own frames. Not sure how much they cost, though.

Failing that, he can get Surly frames (and Soma and others) in and build them up for you to a spec / pricepoint.

I have a Colossi too. Rides well, appears well built (I haven't busted anything) and Gear Brisbane were good to deal with. There were a few minor cosmetic issues with the paint, but not the end of the world. The thread on its build is here

Apologies for the back drop- taken this monring out front of work- was going to stop somewhere more scenic but ended up on a blinder and didn't feel like stopping.

Steerer tube was also cut
