Rims - DT Swiss RR 585 (585g) v Velocity Fusion (480g)

Postby TZ2102 » Fri Sep 19, 2014 10:57 pm

Hi,

Building a 24 spoke (DT aerolite bladed or CX Sapim Ray) wheel with a g3 powertap.

which rim do I choose? DT Swiss RR 585 (585g) v Velocity Fusion (480g)
- 67-70kg
- it will be my only rear wheel so training and any racing that I do end up doing.

Thanks

total weight will be 1024g v 919g.

EDIT: Velocity rim will cost me an extra $40.

I'd choose neither, both are heavy and expensive for their depth, and have an out of date profile (narrow and pointy). Are you trying to match the depth of a front rim?

I'd try something like a Kinlin XC-279. If you're willing to spend a bit more try the Kinlin XR31T (only) avaliable here http://www.bikehubstore.com/category-s/208.htm" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; If cost isn't a factor the Pacenti SL23 is also a good option.

Read the fairwheelbikes rim round up for an idea of other options, FWIW they tested a few DT swiss rims and velocity, and they were pretty underwhelmed with the finish of the velocity's, and would recommend other rims over the DT swiss options. http://fairwheelbikes.com/c/forums/topi ... m-roundup/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; It's missing a few of the latest rims thought (XR31T)

Have you already got the 24 hole hub? It might be worth considering 28 spokes just for that extra durability. I'd also stick to Laser/Race spokes if you must have sapim, CX-Rays aren't worth the extra cost IMO. If you must have bladed, Pillar or CN spoke make CX-Ray "clones" at a much better price. See the Pillar PST-XTRA 1422 and the CNspoke 4.2. Everybit as good as the sapim spokes, but a fair bit cheaper IME.

H Plus Son Archetype (Wiggle have them) is also another excellent option. I love mine.

I am currently building up some XC279's (build kit from BDOP cycling), they look good is all I can say atm.

Archetypes would definetly be an option, especially if you ran 28, but seeing as he/she'll only have one rear wheel it may get used in the wet, which'll wear off that anodising in no time (no biggie, just won't look "as good", will still be 100% functional).

Also, to add to your list, a FLO30 rim would be your best bet if you wanted an aerodynamic alloy rim. It's a fair chunk heavier than the Pacenti and Kinlin Rims, but it's very aero. Like the Archetype it has an anodised finish, which will wear off (again, will still be 100% functional afterwards, just won't look very good whilst it's wearing).

OT: Oh, I've also bought the XC279 kit of BDOP, I've had about 1000km on mine now, I rate them highly! They roll super well, and practically built themselves. I'd rate them as the best value for money kit out there. Mine came in at 1600g dead, (1550g with upgraded spokes) very impressive for a $250 wheelset.

Interesting thoughts guys, will read this properly soon.

Issue is the deal is a special with the g3 powertap for a total of $1000. my other option is to just buy a power2max and upgrade a wheel later....current rear wheel is a Maddux RS 3.0 (pretty bad I assume but I don't know any better!)

I'd definetly get a crank based power meter. P2M is good, stages is another option and there's a 4iii unit that should be avaliable next year.

If I needed a powermeter RIGHT now I'd go with a stages, if I had a bit more to spend P2M or Quarq are also options.

If I'm happy to wait a few months, I'd wait for the 4iii. Even if you don't want to stick it on yourself etc it should bring the price of Stages and hopefully P2M down.

I can't remember where I read this, but Powertap even admitted themselves at eurobike that a hub based powermeter is not the way forward. They're (apparently) prototyping a new system.

P2M it is then!, just need to sort out compatibility...posted in general discussion forum - I can buy the P2M but probably only the classic version. they are sponsored by Movistar - seems legit?

Re rims, bear in mind manufacturers claimed weights should be taken with a grain of salt, or as a guide only. For example I just bought some DT Swiss X470 29er rims which where meant to be 470gr each (hence the model # I guess) but instead weigh in at 500gr each on my scales. That's way over even DT's +/- margin for error. Some manufacturers are worse offenders than others in this regard. Weight should only be a secondary consideration IMO.

I know of numerous people, myself included who have suffered major structural failures of Velocity rims. Avoidance is recommended.
I had a thought, but it got run over as it crossed my mind.
