Crankset Replacement - What to get

Postby redeuca » Tue Oct 14, 2014 6:36 pm

I need to replace my 8 speed Truvativ Five D triple 28/38/48 chainset, and would like some advice on what would be a suitable replacement, preferably in black. I'll be keeping the bike as 8 speed and have read that 9 speed cranks would be compatible.

Considering Sora 9 speed:

With a suitable BB:

The retailer initially said it would be compatible, then contradicted themselves. Has anyone used a similar combination?

Thanks

I've used 9 speed cranksets on 8 speed bikes without issues, and vice versa. As you would be changing to outboard bearings on a frame not expressly prepared for such, you'll want to get your frame faced, and you'll need to check that your FD can be raised because the big ring on that crank is larger.

Truvative S600 is available in *exactly* your old ratios, with a square taper interface if you want to use a square taper BB again. Shimano deore 48T crankset is another option, should work but has a 26T small sprocket so asks a little more of your derailleur total tooth capacity (typically not a problem).

This will work just fine for much cheaper than the Ribble offering http://www.moruyabicycles.com.au/conten ... 0-48t.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Ours is not to reason why...merely to point and giggle
