Changing the cassette question.

Postby alarks » Tue Oct 21, 2014 9:56 pm

Hi guys,

At the moment I have a 53/39 crankset with a 11-25 cassette. I'm thinking of changing it to a 11-28, will there be any compatibility issues? assuming everything is Ultegra 6700.

Thanks!

It'll be fine.
I had a thought, but it got run over as it crossed my mind.

Would be fine. You might need to adjust your rear derailleur. I think it's the B-tension screw, to make sure you have clearance on the 28

I went from 23 to 28 without any hassles.

I think most shimano road deraillers can actually handle 30 teeth? I've done it twice with deraillers spec'd for 28.

Depends on the frame's derailleur hanger to an extent as to whether you can go beyond the rated big sprocket. I've had derailleurs rated to 28T that mash against the big sprocket on a 27 due to a short hanger.

It's only in the last three or so years that derailleurs have been designed to handle 30T sprockets, and Dura-Ace still (officially) max out at 28T, as does anything before 2012-model year Tiagra & 105; Sora & Ultegra got the extended capacity the following year.

Actually the rear deraillers I've got working on 30t are quite old - late 80s early 90s 105.

Using a 4500 Tiagra RD on my commuter at the moment, which has a forged derailleur hanger and it handles a 30T fine. The missus road bike has a 6600 RD which also clears a 30T, similarly it also has a forged rather than a replaceable dropout. I wonder if the forged hangers have more clearance than the newer replaceable type?

All depends on how much mileage your current chain & cassette has done. I'd be replacing the chain as well as it would definitely stop any skipping problems from a stretched chain.

For me replace cassette = replace chain as well

Thanks for the comments guys! Will the length of the chain be an issue? since the cog is larger.

I have a two 6600 derailleured bikes that wont clear a 30t (28t only) and a 6700 that will. :? Guessing the length of the derailleur hanger has a bit to do with it.
