I would go the Cell mainly based on the colour, though the alloy fork on the Momentum should be lighter. If you can stretch to a bike with carbon forks it makes a significant difference to the smoothness. At that price range you could also check out the Reid Aquila.
EDIT: at $450 there's the Reid Osprey which has carbon forks. Or the Cell S2200SE.

Thanks mate. I'll look into the bikes you suggested. There are also some $500 Avantis down from $800-ish (as seen here http://www.bikeexchange.com.au/s/road-b ... y=cheapest" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;), your thoughts?ldrcycles wrote:I've worked on a couple of progear bikes, they generally seem to be only a tiny notch above Big W bikes. I don't mind indexed stem shifters but have the very painful memory of bumping a stem shifter with my knee while accelerating out of the saddle and hitting the bitumen hard. STI shifters are worth the extra, i haven't used those Tourney ones but the old Sora had the same thumb shifter arrangement which i hated. Some people don't mind it though.

For an extra $100 I could go the R350, or for the Avanti Giro 1 (2013) or Avanti Vitale 1 (2010)? http://www.bikeexchange.com.au/a/road-b ... /102251017" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; http://www.bikeexchange.com.au/a/road-b ... /102488561" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;2wheels_mond wrote:The Momentum R350's a bit nicer than the 330 if you can afford the extra $100.
Which of the three do you reckon would be better? I don't know a lot on the specs but I see the price drop has been bigger for the Avanti's!

I'd still say the Momentum - it's got the next groupset level up from the Avantis and is pretty similar in all other aspects. Avantis are generally pretty overpriced for what they are.lavruban wrote:Which of the three do you reckon would be better? I'll be heading down to a local bike shed tomorrow to see if I can replace the frame on my current bike. If not I'll probably get a new one.

Would you rate Avanti higher than the Momentum R350, Cell Otway, Malvern Star Sprint or Oppy, or Reid Osprey?ldrcycles wrote:I was actually looking at a couple of Avanti frames before i found my current Apollo ($160 on gumtree with a nice set of wheels), Avanti make some really nice stuff and they have a solid rep.

Now it's down to:ldrcycles wrote:Pretty much on par with the aluminium Oppy (a mate had an A4 for a while), a smidge above the Cell, Momentum and Reid.
Momentum R350 Shimano Sora (2014) - http://www.bikeexchange.com.au/a/road-b ... /102328113" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Cell Otway 1.0 (2014) - http://www.bikeexchange.com.au/a/road-b ... /102355522" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; (3 year warranty on shimano sti shifters is attractive)
Avanti Giro 1 (2013) - http://www.bikeexchange.com.au/a/road-b ... /102603029" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
All have lifetime warranty on the frame and one year warranty on other components.
