TRP Spyre brakes

Postby }SkOrPn--7 » Mon Oct 27, 2014 2:20 pm

I'm looking at replacing my BB7 with the newer TRP Spyre brakes as they appear to have solved a few of the issues BB7 are lacking.

http://www.trpbrakes.com/category.php?p ... 4&subcat=0

The biggest they offer is 180mm rotors but does anyone have knowledge if they will work with 203mm buy just changing the calliper mount to the standard IS 203mm?

Every other disc brake is compatible with big rotors just by changing the mount adaptor, so I can't see how these would be any different.
I had a thought, but it got run over as it crossed my mind.

Spyre and Spyke are different brakes, however either will work with a larger rotor with the correct adaptor.

The difference with TRP Spyre are that they don't have the concave/convex washers that the BB7 have they mount directly to the calliper mount so I was wondering if there brakes allow for this washer build up and TRP mounts are somehow different in size. I know if you don't use the BB7 washers and mount the calliper directly to the calliper mount the rotor fowls they require the washers. TRP must have designed there calliper to mount on all IS 54mm mounts which wouldn't be an issue if that was the case so do any of you guys know for sure?

Avid design their CPS washer allowance into the caliper itself, not the mount.

i have Spyre's here, so if you want me to test them on a larger rotor i can if you like... i believe i have everything from 140 to 203.

I figured that avid would have that designed into the calliper but I just wanted to make sure my understanding was correct. Mitchy if you could drop a 203 rotor and test the TRP brake I would be very grateful but knowing what you just told me I'm betting they will work on all IS 203 mounts.

Thanks mate

PS how are you liking the brakes from TRP I would love to hear your opinion and run down plus any other things you have noticed be it pros or cons.

Mitchy did you get around to testing these on 203mm setup?

Thanks mate for doing that I ordered 4 sets plus the TRP ML930 Brake Levers I have always used Avid speed dial 7 but thought I would give TRP levers a shot this time. I really appreciate you doing this for me....

FYI, good pads if you don't want to take a grinder to some Ti backed XTR ones

Wow these arrived in the mail today and they are a really neat unit. Allot lighter than BB7 and extremely smooth. The brake lever is a really nice unit so smooth crapping all over the speed dial levers well worth the extra coin. I also like the fact you can now remove the lever without taking off all the remainder of the handlebar hardware due to the hinged clamp. The calliper mounts are lighter and less chunky than Avid mounts which scares me just looking at them but they must have passed the torque and stress testing just not something I'm used to. So far I'm impressed now to wait for the frame to be delivered so I can get these brakes a work out.

I have a set of these on the way, for my Spyres. OEM pads have worn quite quickly, and can't be assed with the grinding business.

Will install in the coming weeks and provide some initial feedback, but positive reviews are easily found on the web.

I use Jagwire cable housing with mine, supposedly makes a noticeable improvement but having never run the standard housing it's hard to say.
