New Wheel Rims 27 x 1 1/4 "
Postby Paul G. » Fri Nov 07, 2014 11:22 pm
Anyone know where I can buy some new rims, alloy 27 inch (630), 36 hole and maybe 40 hole ? I have recently bought some 26 x 1 3/8 rims, (590) alloy Araya (made in Indonesia) from an online store here in Melboure, but no word from them on the 27 inch size. I would have thought that 27 " rims would be easy to buy, but seems like no one wants to know about them. Thanks.

The last ones that I bought came from Harris Cyclery in Massachusetts. Universal Cycles in Portland, Oregon have a couple listed. SJS Cycles in the UK also stock a range.
If you're after an Australian supplier, Human Powered Cycles in Thornbury, Vic sell Sun CR18 in 27". Velogear also sell a couple of Velocity rims in 27".
Watch out - some people these days are calling 650B 27.5" rims. They are not anything like the true 27" (566 rather than 630 ERD).

Bicycle Parts Wholesale usually still supply 27" wheels, but I'm not sure if they do just the rims. They do not sell direct to the public, so you will have to consult your LBS to see if they can get a set for you.
I had a thought, but it got run over as it crossed my mind.

I have a set of 27" Sun CR18 rims on my vintage race bike and they are very nice rims. I would follow up on Duck's suggestion to check with a LBS about what rims BPW might sell, i've bought a fair bit of stuff from them over the years.

Thank you, gentlemen. Yes, I did find the Sun rims at Harris Cyclery in the U.S., a good quality double-walled rim, but too expensive for me.
Just today I have received mail to advise that I can get the 27 inch rims in Melbourne, as mentioned in another post. For a while I feared that such new rims were unobtainable.
Yes, just had a geek at the Thornbury shop website, which shows the Sun rims to be of the narrow variety. I'm sure that they will look good on a racing bike, but mine are roadsters.
I'll go with the Araya 27's as I prefer the wider rim. With a Michelin World Tour tyre on, makes for a more comfortable ride.
And yes, I am very careful with tyre and wheel sizes, thanks. Must have the correct, modern ERTRO designation, BSD (Bead Seat Diameter).
One method of determining wheel size is to measure around the inside of the rim, on the bead seat, Circumference, and divide that figure by Pi, 3.1416 etc. etc. This method is subject to confirmation.
Hmmm, makes me wonder how the different widths of rim affect the braking power, of the old Monitor Speedster side pull brakes. Talking about leverage, applied force of the shoes against the rim.
Old brakes on old bikes - brake shoes - steel or alloy rims - width of rims - wet or dry - there's a whole new thread there. Thanks, fellas.

Hi there, I have a great pair of velocity 27" rims I had made up a couple of years ago. I no longer need them as the frame I used them in developed a crack. Have Novatec hubs etc, might do the trick. Currently have a set of 1 1/4" gatorskin contis on there. Let me know if you're interested.

Hey rainystreets, I might be interested in those wheels, if you're still looking to get rid of them.

Thanks, rainy, but I'm right now. What brake blocks do you use ? Now that I've upgraded to alloy rims, from steel, the caliper brakes don't work much at all. Strange that they were good on the steel rims. Need new brake shoes with a different compound, but don't know what to buy.
