Hey guys,
Gearing question...I'm currently running a running a 52/36 chainset with a 10-speed, 12-28 cassette. Later on I'm changing to a compact crankset and just recently I bought a Shimano 11-28T, 11-speed. Question is...
Can I use the Shimano 11-28T cassette on the 52/36 chainset until I get the 50/34? And will the Shimano 11-28T work on the 50/34 for when I do change?
Also, what is your recommended cassette size for a 50/34 and something that can still be used on my current 52/36?
Any help is much appreciated!
Cheers,
Neil.

If you are running a 10 speed system i think the 11 speed cassette would not work..

I presume you're aware that you can't just slap on a 11 speed cassette onto a 10 speed system and expect it to work. But if you have upgraded shifters / derailleurs / chain to 11 speed and you're asking if they will work with a 10 speed chainset, then that answer is yes. The inner dimensions of the 11 speed chain have not changed compared to 10 speed, and from what I understand the chainring spacing has not changed either.
With regards to cassette sizes that depends on your gearing requirements and your derailleur capacity. I'm not an expert on derailleur capacity as I've never pushed the limits so I'll leave that for others to better answer.

you already have a compact crankset. It is not possible to put a 36T ring on a standard crankset. It sounds like you only need to change the rings if you are looking for lower gears.
Yes the 11 speed system will work with 10 speed chainrings.
As for whether the gears you have are suitable for you or not I can't answer that. Why is your current setup unsuitable?

Cameron

Was given a direct drive trainer for christmas (early present, lol) so I got a 11-28T cassette to put on it. But wasn't sure if it would work on this bike - http://www.specialized.com/us/en/bikes/ ... -105#specs" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; Then I could use that cassette on my bike if I upgraded to a 11-speed set / compact setup.

To use an 11speed cassette on a 10 speed setup Shimano bike you'll need to change (at a minimum)
1 x Shifter (to a Shimano 5800 , 6800 , 9000 or SRAM Force 22 or Red 22)
Rear Derailleur (to match the Shifter )
Chain

I think I'm better of swapping it for a 10-speed cassette for now.
