Flatbar roadbike
Postby silexbartlett » Fri Dec 12, 2014 11:57 am
I wish to convert my Masi Evoluzione roadbike (drop bars running Shimano 105 groupset) to a flatbar for a more comfortable riding position and more brake control for this senior citizen . I am considering using Shimano XTR M980 10 Speed Rapidfire Shifters I Spec B Pair with Shimano Deore LX T670 V-Brake Levers. Could someone please comment on this proposal - will it do the job, is it the most cost effective, any other suggestions? Thanks in anticipation.

Youll need a mtb rear derailleur as well since it's 10 speed. 9 spouted would have been ok.
The v brake levers will function with your road callipers but will have a very "hard" feel because they are designed to pull much more cable than road levers. I deal with this on my single speed but some may not like it.
Generally speaking, you'll want a shorter stem as well.

Just noticed you want more brake control. Avoid v brake levers with road callipers.
Get the shimano flatbar sti levers that are designed to work with road callipers. If the brakes aren't to your liking, try some sticker pads like swiss stop.

As noted above, don't mix XTR shifters with the remaining road bits (MTB 10-sp shifters are not compatible with road derailleurs), or V-brake levers with road brakes - bad times guaranteed!
Use R780 flat-bar road components to replace the necessary drop bar bits.

I had a thought, but it got run over as it crossed my mind.

caution: not all flat bar shifters will work with all front derailleurs

Current R780 & SL-4600 Tiagra FB shifters are compatible with normal FDs. Older models (R770, R550 & R440) require specific front derailleurs.

You might also need to look changing the stem as you will most likely find the geometry will change. Having considered going the other way in the past I would sell the bike and purchase a flat-bar bike. Less hassle and the fit will be or should be much better.

I've just rebuilt a flat bar road bike, 3 x 10, 105 group set (chainset, FD - 5703, RD - 5701, cassette) with Shimano Ultegra SL-R783 shifters. Can get these in 2 x 10 as well. Tiagra would work as well. These are road specific components and work very well together. I have Tektro v-brakes, paired with Avid levers. Pairing road and MTB components is unlikely to work. The shifters were hard to find I found them at bike-dicsount.com. fast and reliable service.
I've clocked up 250km since the rebuild. Shifting has been crisp and braking is firm but not harsh. Overall I am very pleased with the performance to date.

silexbartlett - this is a perfect opportunity to upgrade to di2. you can use 2 lots of climbing shifters and whatever brakes you want instead of the di2 brifters (I've asked the questions previously and someone confirmed it does work)

Click between the following two links and see if you can see much difference.MattyK wrote:Here: http://productinfo.shimano.com/lineupch ... speed=2x11" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;jasonc wrote:where's the 11 speed shimano flat bar shifters
105 bar mount: http://productinfo.shimano.com/spec-pop ... L-RS700/lc
XTR bar mount: http://productinfo.shimano.com/spec-pop ... 000-R/spec
Shimano has a few ways of attaching shifters directly to brake levers: I-Spec (old mount), I-Spec B (current mount) & I-Spec II (new mount).
You can change the top cover the XTR shifter above to make it I-Spec II so it can be directly attached to the XTR brake levers.
XTR I-Spec II: http://productinfo.shimano.com/spec-pop ... 00-IR/spec
XTR race lever: http://productinfo.shimano.com/spec-pop ... M9000/spec
XTR trail lever: http://productinfo.shimano.com/spec-pop ... M9020/spec

XTR I-Spec II: https://www.paul-lange.de/support/shima ... I-3778.pdf
105 bar mount: http://si.shimano.com/php/download.php? ... 0-3686.pdf
What's the bet that you could put a XTR top cover on the 105 lever and attach it to a XTR lever.
A few diagrams & photos showing XTR shifters attached to XTR levers.

Possible modification for someone with 11 speed flat bar road shifters & hydraulic disc brakes.
