Phone mount for handlebars

Postby alexmcm09 » Tue Dec 16, 2014 4:12 pm

Anyone have any experience with these? Not sure I want to take the risk of mounting my phone on my bars if it's a sub-par quality product.

You mean this one for AUD$5.65 shipped?

I haven't, sorry. But I did buy an el-cheapo window mount for my phone and it bounces around like it's on a spring. If you decide to gamble on it, let us know! :|

I've recently ordered one of these:

http://getfinn.com/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

It looks a lot better than the plastic clamp things. It hasn't arrived yet but I'll give a report after I give it a few test rides.

I wonder how it compares to the AUD$1 (shipped) versions on Ebay?

The Finn looks like a better design as it provides some padding between the phone and the bar, and also wraps around just the corners instead of straight across the screen making using the phone on the bar much harder.

$1 is great, but to keep a $500 phone safe, I don't mind paying a little more.

I tried several, common theme was phone overheating and shutting down

I'm guessing they were iPhones... :roll:

In any case, the Finn (or cheap knock-offs) are very unlikely to cause overheating.

I assume the overheating was from constantly being in the sun?

What about the Quad Lock?

I was thinking it was more likely a weather proof case, with no ventilation for generated heat to escape. A recipe for disaster, particularly with bleeding-edge technology pushed to its operating limits.

They were ithings and samsung galaxies... The samsung lasted better than the ithing, but not by much.

And yes, direct sunlight was the culprit, even on nice days....

+1 QuadLock. Quality Australian product; saved my phone when I crashed the MTB.

Quad lock is well worth the cash! Can get a car mount and many others that are compatible. I stacked at 40 kmh last week, phone was safe and never looked like coming off. The rain/sweat cover is great also

for only several dollars I've setup a basic yet functionally effective solution. You can find cheaper derivative mounting bracket versions but the quick release is handy for fitting to oversize bars, transferring between bikes and removing the mount for flipping a bike over. The quick release I find also useful for adjusting tilt to remove direct sun reflection, so flat in the morning/afternoon and angled during midday hours. I've bought a couple under $5 but cheapest presently is this http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/MK11-New-Cli ... 5af10bb743" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

The underside plate connection is detachable but wears down due to shocks so super glue or bolts as I have used are required to securely fix it. A silicone strap that doesn't really wear down is cut out of those cheap bandage mounts on ebay and looped around one of the arms once for enough tightness. I note that the clamp arms are prone to becoming loose from inside malfunction, so I'm going to try not overclamping relying on the tight silicone strap and seeing if the arms last that way.

I have the zip-in type with clear window. Great if you use GPS but don't need to touch the phone much. Phone will never fall and it's waterproof. I believe they're $5 on ebay?

It's not bad tbh. But I have a windows phone and the screen has sunlight mode so I don't suffer any visibility problems. I'd take that tradeoff for waterproofability anyday.
