Hi all
We've been on the hunt for a commuting bike for my girlfriend for the past few weeks without any luck. Hopefully will start work next week, so we really need to get transport sorted asap.
Looking for a full featured, reasonable quality, reasonable weight, commuting/utility bike for less than ~$700 (she still needs to buy all the other bits: helmet, lock, lights etc which will cost a bit). More under the budget the better, as long as quality doesn't suffer too much, as we've both been travelling and not working for the past 12 months.
Prefer to get something that comes with a rear pannier rack, front and rear full mudguards, upright/flatbar handlebars and 28-38mm tyres. Internal gear hub would be really nice too, but not essential (probably not in the price bracket). I'll be teaching her how to properly clean and maintain the drive line and bike in general, so should be ok with regular setups.
Unisex frame will be fine. Barely anything around for commuting, let alone female specific geometry commuting bikes.
We're located in northern NSW, but can arrange a wagon and do a drive up to the Gold Coast as there seems to be far more bike stores up there than around here.
From the specs and picture, the Trek Allant is pretty much what we're looking for:
RRP is $649, but I'm sure it goes for a bit less in stores. The main downside of the Allant is that they're known to be a bit heavy. She'll be riding 10-15km each way, each day, in warm northern weather. For me that's no problems, as I am used to riding and have a good touring bike with SPD shoes, but I don't want her to be put off bicycle commuting because of a heavy, slow bike making the ride more challenging that it needs to be (especially with a couple of unavoidable, long hill climbs on the route).
Open to any other suggestions. If anyone can recommend a good bike store on the GC that stock a wide range commuting bikes even better.
