Campagnolo Bullet Ultra Road Wheelset - Cult 2015

Postby flashpixx » Wed Mar 18, 2015 3:34 pm

Have the opportunity to get a set of these that are barely used and at what appears to be a great price.

They will of course still be 66% more than pro lite Bracciano A42.

I'm running Campy Shamal Ultra at the moment. Can't argue that part of the reason to buy is that they look so darn good.

They seem to get good reviews, without being ENVE's.

Anyone running the Bullet Ultras?

I wouldn't of thought the Bullet's would be that much better than the Shamal's Flash (the Shamal's are such great wheels). If you are looking for aero I'd keep an eye on those new Swiss Side Hadrons.

Then again if you are looking for a nice set of good looking coffee shop wheels that go with your new bike then yeah nice.... :-)

Edit: BTW, think the Bullet's and Shamals use the same USB bearings? (my Shamal's are USB).

Yep, as I understand the CULT > USB in the upper-end Campag / Fulcrum wheelsets.

The Bullets are nice rims, that's for sure.

Yeah Shamal are really nice wheels. Curious about the bullets given the asking price (40% less than Chain Reaction price). Shamal are 24 / 27 I think. Bullets are 50. Similar construction, tho Cult is apparently better? than USB. For that price I wonder if there is anything that compares. In any event they will probably sell before I do anything about it.

Yeah. You gotta pay if you want to play... Shamals should be great. If you are springing for Aero they need to cost 3 times your current set otherwise the maths doesn't justify.

Yeahit's pretty crazy. The maths seems to be around that to me. If you have sucky wheels, then 800-900 on cheap aero wheels seems pretty good. But if you have good alloy wheels, you won't get a light enough rim with good enough aero profile and improved hubs without looking at a price range around 3 times your alloy wheels. There is nothing wrong with a Fulcrum Zero - they are better wheels than the Bullet 50s but they Bullet 50s cost more to manufacture.

Aero trumps weight in most situations. They should therefore be faster than the shamals or zero's.

From the swisside 2015 thread;
Swiss_Side_Wheels wrote:Hi guys.
We felt that the Swiss Side Heidi wheel set was a good choice for the comparison. It is very representative of a 'decent' aero performance, standard wheel set, without being terrible aero-wise like wheels with external machining on the rim between the spokes. For reference, the Heidi has a spoke count of 18 front & 24 rear (same as the Hadrons). We published the relative performance of the Heidi wheel set last year compared to other wheels, including the Hadron 625. http://www.swissside.com/853/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;.
That would relate to a number of campy rims including shamal and zero I reckon.

I rode a set of Bullet Ultra 80's for about a year. Just sold them to replace with a set of Aeolus in a similar profile. The Bullet's are aero but not in the same way as something like the D3 or Firecrest. That being said, they roll like nothing else (which you'd know if you've ridden high end Fulcrum wheels) and were very comfortable to ride compared to a few others I trialled.

For the price I think they're a great wheel and they tend to sell for ~20% leas than the Red Wind XLR which I understand to be the exact same wheel.

Better not tell me where the 50's are for sale because I'm seriously considering putting a set on the roadie.

Only 10 speed would have to replace the freehub... that's just enough for me to resist :-)

These wheels are pretty much the same as the Red Wind XLR CULTs aren't they? Look nice

I have an 11 speed Shimano freehub sitting on the shelf behind me with your name on it! :)

The Bullet Ultra's are exactly the same as the Red Wind XLR's as far as I'm aware, just different branding. For some reason the Campy version seems to sell a bit cheaper all the time, maybe because they only sell them with a Campy freehub.
