Which QR skewers?

Postby petie » Sun Mar 22, 2015 10:56 pm

Looking to harness the collective wisdom/google power around QR skewers. Replacing some on my MTBs that aren't up to scratch. Current ones have a hard rubber external cam which is rubbish. New skewers need to be internal cam or metal external cam and be able to cope with single speed (in horizontal dropouts). Links to purchase would be super.... Have searched this forum and the wide Web with minimal luck. Don't care much about weight, definitely don't want to spend a fortune. There are millions on ebay but I can't be sure they won't be just as rubbish as my current skewers.
Thanks!

The ones which came with a cheap set of Shimano WHR500 wheels surprised the heck out of me. Top notch quality and will fit your requirements. I'd go to a bike shop and ask for some Shimano skewers.

+1, cannot be beaten.

Specifically any of the ones that look like this-

The Shimano ones are nice. That's what I have on my road bike.
For the commuter, however, I swapped the rear Hub to a 10mm straight thru axle, using a DT Swiss RWS 10mm thru bolt (http://www.dtswiss.com/Components/RWS/RWS-Thru-bolt-en" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;).
The ratchet system is great, and you can also get standard QR skewers using the same RWS setup.

Had good luck with Hope and some Shimano skewers but now run DT Swiss RWS on all the MTBs - a little fiddly but very very solid. Crank Bros. skewers didn't last long - avoid.

Ghettograveller is running Aerozine titanium skewers that are stupid light but haven't got a lot of miles on them (plus they were a freebie so even if they aren't great then I can't complain).

CX bike is running OE Fulcrum skewers that seem to have taken a leaf from the Shimano book.
Ours is not to reason why...merely to point and giggle

Had them on my XC race bike a few years ago, amazingly light but never had any issues with them. No way they would get the same clamping force as Shimano though.

That could be said for pretty much all Crank Bros. stuff.

Another vote for Shimano skewers.

I had a thought, but it got run over as it crossed my mind.

Have Crank Bros QRs on my CX bike, and have found the rear likes to come loose occasionally unless closed really hard - not ideal when you get to the bottom of a fast road descent and find the rear wheel is sitting loose in the dropouts!
I've seen things you people wouldn't believe

Yeap, Shimano is your only real choice. Every other one I have used has been rubbish.

No good on the mtb. The rear axle is to short.

Yeah, I tried correcting as soon as I posted. I actually meant to say shimano closed cam, looked over at my bike in the corner abd spat out ultegra. Brain fart. Same closed cam design though. You guys know the right spacing. Deore or xt.

Higher level Campagnolo are good for the road. Fulcrums higher end mtb offerings would be good for the dirt, although I don't think you can buy them separately. .
