Hi peeps,
I'm planning to get a bike computer to get my cadence right. I'm currently using a Fitbit Surge which is spotty because it doesn't have a dedicated cycling mode. I reckon when the new cycling feature arrives its going to mean nothing because of the absence of speed/cadence sensor for the Surge.
I've done researching the difference between 500 and 510. The 510 has a larger colour screen, online syncing with phone, better online services. The 500 is a standard fanfare and seems to be a good value for money. I believe the obvious choice would be Edge 510 Bundle but thats $399 vs $238 (on Edge 500 Bundle) at 99bikes excluding $10 discount for first online order ($5 for member fee).
What are your thoughts?
Dave

I have 2 riding friends who have purchased garmin 500 and 510 from GPS R US on the Gold Coast and I have purchased a Garmin 500 as a gift to another friend.
Cheaper is not nec. best. Their price is competitive ($255.00 for a Garmin 500 with the lot) and more importantly, when one of the HRM straps failed to pick up after 3 months they replaced it pronto no questions asked incl. shipping.

Cool, I'll check that out.open roader wrote:Cheaper is not nec. best. Their price is competitive ($255.00 for a Garmin 500 with the lot) and more importantly, when one of the HRM straps failed to pick up after 3 months they replaced it pronto no questions asked incl. shipping.
What about between 500 and 510. Would getting the Edge 500 now a wise move? I see this as a good value for money start-up kit considering I only need HRM, cadence, speed and GPS. In other words, is there anything I might need in the future that is only available on the 510 so that I don't outgrow the equipment so quickly.

I can't say as I don't need GPS on my bikes thus don't use one.davesday wrote:What about between 500 and 510. Would getting the Edge 500 now a wise move? I would get a 500 before a 510 and an 800 before a 510 if you want to use the maps/navigation.
The 500 works okay with the navigation (I use Ride With GPS and it gives you turn by turn navi on my 500 and 810) the 500's screen is a little too small and I guess computing power a bit lacking compared to the 800.
Aside from touch screen on the 510 and quicker start up I don't see much benefit of a 510 over a 500 especially at the prices the 500 can be had for.
Pushy's have the 500 bundle for $250 online- with local warranty

Check out highlytunedathletes.com.au
I recently purchased a 510. Very happy with the price ($299 just for unit as I already had the HRM strap etc) and delivery time was very good.

Have a look at 99 bikes as they were the cheapest when I bought mine and that was by everyone.

Agreed, 99bikes was the cheapest place I found last year. The 500 and 510 aren't easily comparable as the 510 is such a big jump in terms of price and features. You just have to decide if those features are a dealbreaker for you. Both will accurately track your ride and display all the data you need, so it's just a matter of user interface
FWIW the thing I hate the most about the 500 is how long it takes to switch the settings between different bikes (I have 2), for example if you want it to track the km for each bike*. It's at least 13 button presses.
*you can also do this after the fact on Strava anyway...

Thats right. I believe 99bikes is the cheapest I've seen so far. In my opening post, I found the 99bike price at $238 (red bundle). Spend $5 to be a member and get $10 discount off first online purchase. Essentially $5 off plus free shipping.
OK it seems I'm on the right track then. Edge 500 it is!

Had both and still using the 510.
It turns on faster and syncs faster too.
The larger and color screen are all worth it over the 500.
Now itching to get a 1000 as I can't see much benefit over the 510 where as when I had the 500, the 510 was an easy decision to upgrade.
