Conflicted. $1000 on wheels.

Postby Hillsaretheenemy » Thu Apr 23, 2015 9:39 pm

So my current wheel set is an Oem Synchros RP1.5 that weighs about 1550gm. they seem to perform quite well but I have nothing close to compare them to. I want to stay with clinchers and do not see tubeless as an advantage. Current list includes Duraace 9000 C24's, Fulcrum Zero's, Braciano A27s and various 30-50mm Carbon options from Farsports or Light Bicycle. The bike is Scott Addict 10 with Ultegra and carbon everything. I'm finding it hard to decide between a light reliable wheel like the C24 and maybe a faster 50mm carbon option from China/Taiwan. Ideally I'd like to have a stiffer wheel. (I feel like the front flexes in cornering) and less drag above 35kmh.. without a weight penalty or even saving some grams. Closet WW.

Id probably go the Fulcrum R zeros but can highly recommend Light Bicycle if you go the chinese route. Their 45mm U shaped carbon clinchers are pretty damn good for the price. And Vivian there is probably the nicest and most helpful sales person I have ever encountered.

I don't think you can really be picky if you go the China Carbon route, because they don't have brand names trying to produce a particular feel. What you see is what you get. The wheel is probably going to be excellent, but just a note about expectations.

I am thinking of building myself with gigantex tub rims and chris king hubs. Lots of fun.

Reality is, unless you race at a higher grade, you won't notice the difference very much. Don't stress. If carbon gets you up in the morning, get that.

Yeah you are pretty restricted in the hubs as well with the Chinese builds. I think they only offer a couple of diff options so if you are thinking of getting some flash Chris kings or White Industries hubs built in then you'd have to look elsewhere I'd say... But in saying that I'm quite happy with mine using fairly generic Novatechs... (I fall into Xplora's later category :-) )

I'm getting some Pacenti SL23 rims built up with my old AC Micro 58 / Road 205 hubs, using CX-Ray and Brass Nipples , 18/24 build. Should be around 1400gms all built up for around $500

Nice and wide too, I'm getting the new 2015 extrusion which is 20.3 internal width , vs last years 18.5

That doesn't leave much wall thickness for a brake track?

The wide rims offered by the Chinese carbon options are part of the appeal. I like a 25mm tyre but think the shape looks odd on a narrow rim. As for hubs, the Novatecs seem to get reasonable feedback for a sealed bearing hub. I don't think I'd spend big dollars on a hub with sealed bearings but given the choice Campy or Shimano hubs would be prefered

If you want a stiffer but light wheels, you can get carbon wheels, there are more and more chinese manufactures focus on carbon wheels, so I think carbon is the trend.
Wider rims can lead to better traction and improve road feel.

Nice. How do they ride? Any problems setting up the brakes with that narrow track?

Ride really nice, running Vittoria Open Corsa 25mm, and sooooo smooth. Brake track are fine, but you do need the narrower style pads, such as koolstop dura 2, std shimano pads would overhang the brake track.

The koolstop's are a far superior pad anyway so thats worked out even better.

Nice wheels & excellent weight.

Good choices, both the wheels and rubber.

No conflict on $1,000 wheels. Keep what you have.

If you are chasing light, it's quite ludicrous to chase ever less tangible weight reductions when the most effective loss of weight is the little extra around the middle anyway. A gram off there is gonna have greater efficiency and performance dividend than a gram lighter bike part, not to mention a lot of other benefits. Many strategies to do so will cost a lot less than $1,000.

I got to pick them up from the post office today and even got out for a 50k spin this arvo. They shipped with the 23mm GP4000II installed so that's the way I weighed them and my Synchros rims with 25mm GP4000II came out 17grams lighter... Given I'm not sure what tubes are in either (I know there's a conti supersonic in the front Synchro) I'd call the weight a dead heat. I did know this before buying. With only one ride and in very windy conditions I'm not going to start raving about them however one of my main reasons for wheel shopping was the unstable flex feel I was getting from the front. No conclusions but this instantly felt much better, from my point of view both front and rear felt much stiffer laterally. I had originally planned to re use my quite new 25mm tyres on the racing3's and pass the new 23mm ones onto my wife bike. I'm a kind bloke. As they came mounted I thought I would give the 23's a spin before I pull them off. I was pleasantly surprised at how well the 23's rode over broken surfaces, only on bigger square edges did they seem "worse". For reference I've been using 100psi on the front and 105 in the rear 25. On the 23's 105 front and 110 rear. I'm not sure if this is in some part down to the wheels but will test this by fitting the 25's.. maybe next week. I just want to ride.
