Brake pad recommendations?

Postby gregaudio » Tue May 12, 2015 7:24 pm

Hi, my V Brakes take the 70mm rubber inserts. I've been using Koolstop Salmons because I've read that they're good in the wet and are less inclined to wear down aluminium rims. Problem is, they're getting costly to replace. I'm searching for advice on what types you all use and find works well.

My commuting setup is 700C Fulcrum Racing rims with 28mm Schwalbe Marathons.

Spend the dollars or don't stop...in time. Your choice!

Swisstop are also an option but also not cheap.
Ours is not to reason why...merely to point and giggle

Swissstop sell sets of four pads, so value is better than it first appears.

Braking is an area where the best priced option is not always the best value.

KoolStops or Swisstops are worth the money IMO.

If you don't mind going to the effort, get a set of KS Thinlines for the good days and save the Salmons for winter/wet work.
...whatever the road rules, self-preservation is the absolute priority for a cyclist when mixing it with motorised traffic.

Why did I need convincing? It's always worth the extra for good brakes & tyres.

Money spent!

Good work :-)

I just changed my Koolstop Blacks for Koolstop Salmons with the wet weather, they are both great brake pads, It will take a pretty good brake pad to convince me to change to another make :-)

Regards,

SB

I have the Shimano BR-M561 calipers with I think standard pads on them and in need of some top quality braking. Should I go for the Swissstop FLash, Flash Pro or race pads? Alloy brake surface btw.

I got much improved braking from Tektro Oryx cantilever brakes by changing the original 72 mm for Clarks brand which were cheap also.
Early days though so don't know what wear factor is...

Cheers
