Garmin 520 !!

Postby MichaelB » Fri Jul 03, 2015 12:50 pm

Well, my recent prayers were answered !!!

After missing several calls from the missus during a ride (multiple occasions) and having to wear the consequences post ride, I found myself wishing that my Garmin 500 would have the text/call notification feature that the Garmin 1000 has.

But I didn't want to fork out that much for an oversized unit.

Then only a few weeks later, the 520 appears !!

Here is a pretty in-depth review http://www.dcrainmaker.com/2015/07/garmin-edge-520.html

So, I've already put my wallet on the line with HTA and put in the deposit. :D :D

And whilst I don't want 1/2 the other crud like Strava live etc that comes with it, I like that it's still the same size as the 500, but has clearer graphics making it easier to read and a bigger screen.

Winner all round.

Still not cheap, but cheaper than the 510 and 1000.

Looks the business.

I'm using a 310XT for both running and cycling - this might tempt me enough to pony up for a specific bike computer.

My 510 isn't that old :(

Do like the 3rd party map download, save getting lost out in the hills :)

Yes, the crappy temperature readings on my 500 have forced me to get an upgrade to a 520 :-)

I am monitoring the 520 uptake with interest - still rocking the 500, so if all is good, might be tempted to upgrade!

Mine is about 3 weeks old :(

PITA when you miss the boat by that much - 510 will go clearance now, and 520 I could have probably got for the same price. Oh well!
Another one of those high-vis commuter types. Ultegra equipped flat bar is my weapon of choice - with panniers :D

This is one of the few times that I have timed it well

My 500 has done over 3 years of sterling service, resisted plenty of drops, so time for a new one :D

Anyone seen a release date?

Hard buttons sounds great to me - there's really no need for a touch screen I don't think, it just leaves you with a less responsive interface and finger smudges

I don't know what you are complaining about, I just bought a new 510 three days ago - my third after last two died.
Did I mention the two dead 500s I have as well (and the third one that fell off the bike and was run over by passing car). :x
You need Premium Strava membership to do the live tracking thing. Apparently the firmware for the 510 will be uphraded soon so it can do the live tracking too.

I am in a bind on this... No touchscreen is a big no no for me. I have 3 different screens I like to refer to at different times. Plus training mode. No way I am using a button for that. I like the linked light and radar setup... A 510 might be a better play if the phone calls come thru that one.

Don't rush out and buy just yet, there's a bit of a GPS war going on and lots of new models coming out. Garmin has just released a couple of mini GPS bike computers, the Edge 20 and Edge 25, and Bryton has the Rider 200 and Rider 210. The Brytons have better battery size but wrinkles with the uploading. And there's Lezyne's effort.

If I need a smart phone to use all features I'm not interested and I'll stick to my 500.

You don't have an internet connected phone (with Bluetooth)?

Geez you have had a bad run. Had a 500 that lasted no probs, and now the 510 is great, love the faster response. Like I said the only useful feature on the 520 for me is the detailed maps.

I got to hold a 520 today at the ATEC Expo! It's very, very light with lots of buttons on it. I don't know how easy they will be to press while riding, but the easy access buttons seemed to easily control the screens, while the hard to use buttons seems to be for the settings. It didn't seem as robust as the 500, though.

The Garmin guy said that they would be around $399 Aus. He also said the 510 is now discontinued!

I also spoke to Polar who didn't even know about the 520, but they said they would be releasing a cycling model with Strava connectivity for about the same price. It might be game on for the GPS giants.

No, I couldn't be bothered with stuff like that, just chews up a lot of time, surfing the net on a phone is tedious.

All Indications are that this will not happen, hence why I went for the 520

? I was under the impression from Dcrainmakers article that the 510 and 810 would be almost the same as 520/1000?

For the strava type features yes, but not the call notification.

I may be wrong there, but couldn't see any mention of it.

520 looks to hit the sweet spot for me. The call notifications is a good one as my phone is usually in my panniers when commuting, or in the waterproof pocket in the BNA kit :-) I don't use an earpiece on my phone, and it runs in silent mode 99% of the time. I don't even have a ringtone lol
