Nice feature when it works. Apparently it's fairly reliable with the Edge 1000 and Android phones but has been pretty flaky on iPhones since iOS 8. I've had 3 successful notifications and about 8 fails through June.queequeg wrote:520 looks to hit the sweet spot for me. The call notifications is a good one as my phone is usually in my panniers when commuting, or in the waterproof pocket in the BNA kit I don't use an earpiece on my phone, and it runs in silent mode 99% of the time. I don't even have a ringtone lol

My 500 is about 3 years old and going strong. Never had an issue with it, though I have had to power cycle it a few times when it has lost GPS signal, but that is probably twice a year with normally 10+ rides a week. I know of others who have had data lost due to corruption but I have not had this. I have been very happy with my 500, and resisted the 510 as it was too big and bulky for what I wanted. I did want the ability to upload via my phone. I like to upload after my ride immediately rather than bulk upload once a week (I am often trying to improve Strava segment times and like to see how I go). When commuting to work, it can be a pain to take the 500 to my desk and upload manually. Would be great to do it automagically via my phone and leave the computer on my bike. The Strava integration will be even better for monitoring my progress on Strava segments. I also have missed some important calls while riding, so notifications will also be appreciated. If it works as well as the specs suggest, I am in.

Any idea what a bare bones unit will cost? I don't need sensors and tbf, i'd rather not pay for mounts, cables and tethers i'm never going to use...

Good work. Agree, the 520 looks to have hit the sweetspot.GeoffInBrisbane wrote:$399 version pre-ordered. I need something to replace my 500 which has started to lose GPS more and more often. Glad I waited rather than buying a 510, this one is EXACTLY what I want. Will probably be buggy as hell to start with, but I can put up with that. They get it right in the end...
My 500 is working fine though, although Xmas is not that far away....

Errrr...I note that the new Garmin Edge 25 has this notification feature...and is AU$229 for the device only or AU$269 for the bundleMichaelB wrote:Well, my recent prayers were answered !!!
After missing several calls from the missus during a ride (multiple occasions) and having to wear the consequences post ride, I found myself wishing that my Garmin 500 would have the text/call notification feature that the Garmin 1000 has.
But I didn't want to fork out that much for an oversized unit.
Then only a few weeks later, the 520 appears !!
Here is a pretty in-depth review http://www.dcrainmaker.com/2015/07/garmin-edge-520.html
So, I've already put my wallet on the line with HTA and put in the deposit.
And whilst I don't want 1/2 the other crud like Strava live etc that comes with it, I like that it's still the same size as the 500, but has clearer graphics making it easier to read and a bigger screen.
Winner all round.
Still not cheap, but cheaper than the 510 and 1000.

Check your settings after the upgrade though. My max HR mysteriously dropped from 196 to 177bpm.Boognoss wrote:Woot, firmware 4.1 just released today for my Edge 1000. I now have Strava segments on it

OK, missed that, but prefer the larger screen and some of the mapping features of the 520.silentbutdeadly wrote:

Thanks for that. Just checked and looks good so far. It hasn't deleted ride history like prev firmware updates so that's a win (only the ride data was deleted not the totals in the past).kb wrote:Check your settings after the upgrade though. Been uploading that way for a while - functions well enough.GeoffInBrisbane wrote:I also figured out I could upload via phone on my 500 in the meantime. Alas it is hardly like Bluetooth - USB mini OTG cable and micro USB adapter, android, and the Strava desktop site can be used to upload from the 500 without a computer. Hardly elegant, but as I currently have no home internet, a welcome stopgap measure.

Having a natural talent getting lost easily, staring at the a blank page with some lines on my 510 doesn't help me much.

Hi Michael,
We are receiving stock of the performance bundle early next week, and hopefully stock of the non-bundle towards the end of the week. As soon as we get a firm date from Garmin we will be contacting all the non-bundle pre-order customers.
