Have you tried the beta firmware? I'd call it a partial success. No more issues reconnecting when waking the Edge 1000 from sleep but I still had problems reconnecting if I left it on while the vectors went to sleep.

Haven't run into this (yet). I'm using Vector 1 with Fenix 3, so far there were no problems.

I haven't as I don't have access to an Edge 1000 to do the update. A shame it appears to only be a partial success. The Vectors going to sleep is the problem for me...

Could anyone please give me a run down on the maps; specifically how you access (download) maps if you are travelling to another country and how much do they cost?

I have used courses extensively overseas on the 500 and, similar to the comment on being off Strava segment, being off course, no satellite and an empty grey screen, save a North marker, can be extremely frustrating and time wasting. Having a map would be enough to sway me to purchase a 520 subject to ease of load/cost/quality.

Thanks

You can use Open Street Maps (OSM) which are free, instructions here: http://www.dcrainmaker.com/2013/05/down ... structions" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Check out DCRainmaker's review - http://www.dcrainmaker.com/2015/07/garmin-edge-520.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

I'm in the process of downloading the maps now :D and it's just as DC explained. REALLY useful site !!!

Anyway, back to the 520 grumblings ...... :evil:

After feedback from HTA re the 520 not always recognising the phone (despite the phone recognising the 520 ...), I confirmed the Garmin Connect app is the latest version (2.13.3), updated the phone to iOS 9.0.1 , but when I tried to get the latest firmware for the 520 (HTA said it should be 2.30), that's where the wheels really fell off.

Downloaded and installed Garmin Express on the home computer. No probs. Connect 520 , and it took a while and 2 goes for it to even find it, but find it, it did. Then you get the infinite "Reading Device Information" line that goes on, and on, and on ....

after 5 min of going nowhere the 1st time, I tried again. Then I left it for 7 min, and the same. Then 10 min and tried again.

Shut down Express and tried again. Same thing. :evil: :evil: :evil: :evil:

Sent off terse message to HTA that I'll try again tonight, but if it doesn't work, they'll be getting it back and a refund request.

I'll stress that HTA have been helpful and it's not their fault, but it just irks me that an expensive piece of kit doesn't work properly. The gripes re backlight and elevation screen zoom are frustrations (big ones at that), but for $400, it should work out of the box and not have to be updated within a week.

Michael

It may be worth 'CC'ing in Garmin Aust into your emails to HTA. In the past I have found that doing this gets things happening. I am assuming here but I would assume HTA are going through the "usual" steps to get the median customer "up to date". It may be that as the unit is very new that there are known issues with certain types of phones, levels of software between devices etc that Garmin are reluctant to release as a public thing to prevent bad publicity. I would also mention that you are on a public forum asking for help with all your problems and that there are already 5 pages of answers and other problems being exposed. That may get Garmin jumping to get you fixed up or refunded to save face.

Just thought I'd add that apart from my relatively minor gripes (already posted here) I really like my 520, and it survived a long MTB race last weekend without any problems. It's a nice little unit, much prefer it to my old Garmin 800.

Hi Bill,

HTA have actually been pretty good, and have offered to have a look at the unit. I'll try again over the weekend, and if it doesn't work, then I'll send it back.
I'm just frustrated that some of the good stuff is now sooooo complicated, it can be hit and miss as to how well it works. Especially when it doesn't.

2.14 now. Recent fixes include Bluetooth connectivity (apparently, I haven't tested it yet myself)

New firmware (v3.00) now available:

Will likely try this and the second Vector beta (3.73) this weekend.

Been uploading that way for a while - functions well enough.
I thought of this as a good idea too but every time I've tried it my latest ride file is truncated to 72 bytes (emptied).
I figured android is writing something to the device too early; before the file system is opened correctly.

What do people think the battery life of the 520 would be without using the backlight?
15+ as advertised?

With HRM, PM, speed sensor, GPS+GLONASS, 1 sec recording, course navigation and Bluetooth (still buggy) I had to charge it after 7 hours (at 20% battery remaining). I guess it must be possible to squeeze at least 12 hours... but 15 - I don't think so.
I take it's normal for most battery-powered devices. Say, Fenix3 can't live through a week with 10 hours of training. Even though Garmin says it should last for 20 hours in GPS mode.

Thanks.
Sounds like a step back from the 500 & 510.
But you can charge the 520 while recording and it won't turn off like the 500 right? Micro USB?

Yes, charging port is microUSB. Haven't tried charging it mid-ride. To be honest, I rarely ride for longer than 8 hours, so do not consider battery life a problem.

From memory i ran into issues (the next time)if i didn't eject the garmin from the phone properly. As long as i remembered to do that it was fine on a Galaxy S4/Android 4.2. Maybe i should test it with my S6!

It would probably manage that if you don't use a PM and with GLONASS turned off. Otherwise not a chance. OTG charging is easy though :)
