Hi all, I'm currently in the market to purchase a new roadie sometime between the next 1-3 months (I will be overseas and traveling a lot so later is fine). I currently own a CX bike running Shimano 2300 and a recently completed fixie. Being a student I don't have buckets of cash to drop on a new bike but I'm aiming to put aside about $1,200-1,500 with a bit of stretch in that top figure. I would like something with 5800 as I would love to have 11sp and I also am planning to start racing towards the end of the year. Currently I'm looking at something like a Polygon Helios A5.0 which comes in at $1,150 leaving enough for a new helmet, some pedals and maybe a nice set of kit. What are the opinions on direct buy bikes like the Polygon and Cell Akuna? Am I better off buying something second hand and looking at a bigger brand?
Cheers
Sneaky edit: Also, I'm looking to get a bike for the GF as a Christmas present. This will be her first bike in years but she is keen to join me on rides. Thinking of something alloy, second hand, and probably Tiagra?

Cannondale CAAD10 105, currently on special in WA $1500 + free kit. If I wanted a new race bike this would be my choice.TomBikes wrote: I would like something with 5800 as I would love to have 11sp and I also am planning to start racing towards the end of the year.
You need to get a bike that fits herTomBikes wrote:Sneaky edit: Also, I'm looking to get a bike for the GF as a Christmas present. This will be her first bike in years but she is keen to join me on rides. Thinking of something alloy, second hand, and probably Tiagra?
A ill fitting bike is uncomfortable to ride and will not be ridden as much as a bike that fits properly.
And to confuse you even more there are WSD (women specific design) bikes which some women prefer and other prefer stock bikes.

Shame I don't have the funds for it at the moment Hopefully it is still on sale when I get back.nickobec wrote: You need to get a bike that fits her

As for a bike for the Missus, I well adn truly know the importance of a proper fit. She is about the same height and has a similar arm and leg length to what I had when I got my first (serious) bike. She has ridden it before and I had it fitted to her at one point. She needs something around a 52cm frame. As for geo, I would (and she would) prefer something with a more laid back, sportive geometry. Any recommendations?

Just be a little careful you don't go GF -1 by buying yourself a shinny new bike and the GF gets the dodgy secondhand job. Or you may never hear the end of it! I think equal standing bikes like a Giant Defy and a Giant Avail are a very sensible compromise. Maybe get a bike shop to see if they can do a package deal?
But its a minefield buying GF's/wives bikes...

Or a Giant TCR SLR 2 which is going for around the same price at the moment. Also 105 5800 components.

Would love to pick it up but I just don't have the funds sadly Traveling tends to drain the wallet. Once I return I should hopefully have enough to make a purchase and if there is a similar bargain I'll be jumping on it Any idea of the quality of Polygon bikes? The review of the C6 on here seemed pretty good. Looking at the a5.0 personally.
She really just wants a bike to get around and join me on the odd ride. Being a student (and a poor one at that) we both have limited funds and a second hand bike is acceptable (she even said so herself).

Better hurry up and marry her Tom
Now the Polygon's. I like the C6 and C8 a lot. The A5.0 (that's the one with the triple 10 speed 105 right?) not so much. You may as well go the Tiagra C4 for cheaper or really not much diff than a Cell Lapa 2.0 or a Reid Falco Elite which are prob a fraction better for less (or even the BH). That's really the budget end. Might be wiser to save some money up and buy the C6/C8 or Cell Akuna/Omeo or even a Giant Defy/TCR Advanced. The latter is where the smart money is I reckon.
Always lots of sales on, sales come and go, so don't think you missed out on anything special.
Edit: Just looked up the new 2015 models and the new A5.0 actually looks pretty good (must of been the 2013/14 model I was think of!). So yeah that looks a winner 11 speed, compact cranks for $1150 on paper. Still alloy, but light alloy, just run bigger 25/28c tyres and gel bar tape!

Hahahaha Rodney, I can't even afford to get her a new bike, how am I meant to get a ring? Unless she'll accept an old headtube spacer...
Yeah I wasn't keen on the 2014 model either, triples are just weird. I was looking at an akuna but the A5.0 seems like a pretty good deal. rs11's and full 105 5800 with a pretty high end full carbon fork on a reasonably light frameset. At $1150 it leaves some cash spare for some upgrades down the track (also might treat myself to some carbon 105 pedals too)
