Just wasted $370 (OpenPro 105 wheelset)

Postby jpgibson » Tue Aug 11, 2015 9:42 pm

Having commuted 170km/ wk for a few years, I seem to wear out rims pretty quickly - typically less than 10,000 km. have used Ultegra and RS80 with little trouble. I'm 90 kg, so thought I'd try a higher spoke count wheelset. Wiggle had the above, delivered in a few days. Wheels rolled well, I thought the spoke tension was bit low, but anyhoo.....
One week in, hit a small concrete paver(2 cm step) at no more than 20 kph- flat spotted rim. Advice I was given from a wheel builder , mavic alloy is soft and sapim spokes are rubbish. That leaves me the hubs....
It's not economically viable to rebuild both wheels , so I've ordered some Prolite Bracianno (?sp) HD.
I am not happy but it's just the way the cookie ( or rim) crumbled.
Rant over, that combo NOT recommended if you're heavy and a commuter.

Really? I've been commuting on Open Pros for years, with pannier bags and chunky tyres.
Most rims don't take too kindly to big jolts, but 2cm is nothing. Most lips on gutters are about that and I have never had an issue.

I don't like Sapim spokes, finding them too stretchy, which results in a floppy wheel, but I've built several sets of Open Pro/Shimano hub wheels with DT spokes, and to the best of my knowledge all bar one are still in service, that exception being crashed out. And they haven't all been under flyweight riders.

I would say the build wasn't up to scratch moreso than the components, even accounting for the spokes.
I had a thought, but it got run over as it crossed my mind.

I have a Halo branded wheel, 4 pawl Campy, with OpenPro and 32 count Spain - from the same company as yours. I had a stick take out one spoke and bend another. It stayed true for a couple of months in that condition
When I finally took it to my trustworthy repairer the workshop Manager mentioned that all the spokes had been poorly tensioned.

So poor build not component quality.

What tyre size and pressure are you running ?

The reason I ask is that poor build quality will show up in broken spokes & rims going out of true. I do not expect however that will cause a flat spot on the rim. Instead that requires the rim itself hitting something hard which suggests an issue with tyre or pressure.

What are you doing with the old wheel ? At the very least it is an opportunity to learn and practice building your own wheels.

I reckon it would be a fair bet that any new $370 wheel set is a waste of money.

Disagree RonK. Still training on a set of old Campagnolo Scirocco wheels. Weigh a ton but bombproof! Including the time a while back when my derailleur snapped and derailleur went into the wheel. Replaced the one broken spoke and wheel is still going strong!

Low tension can contribute to flat spots. As the wheel is subject to compression on a bump, if the spoke tension is too low the wheel will tend to bulge, generally at points at right angles to the compression. If the force of the compression is sufficient to exceed the rim's elasticity, a permanent flat spot will result.

ive been running 90-95 psi on rear for years with no pinch flats. i hita pot hole at high speed ( rs80's) and all i got was a flat and a small buckle. the sound was such that i expected the wheel to disintegrate. this (ex) wheelset would not have fared so well. The rear wheel now consists of a hub only. i'll keep the front as a spare.
bought prolite bracciano HD's.

I picked up a H Plus Son / 28 3x/ Dura Ace wheelset from Wiggle last year, has held up well to my 70kg. Opted for these for pretty much the same reasons as you mentioned... Shimano rims only last me 10months or so, mind you Mavic only faired slightly better.

I'm a bit love/hate with these wheels. They ride really well, just feel like boat anchors compared to a nice set of low spoke/carbon wheels.

I easily got 18K out of my DT Swiss Tricons before I retired them. And they've still got plenty of braking surface, never needed to be trued and still have some of the decals.... I reckon there pretty durable.

I've been running these http://www.bicyclewheels.com/merchant.m ... y_Code=RWNfor 5 years with no issues apart from when I had a bad stack and slightly buckled the back one. Only problem was this place sent me a 36 spoke set by mistake, too much of a PIA to send back. I have commuted with with the Mavic Open Pro's no issues, I also find the wheels far more comfortable than any other set I have used.

Open pro's yeah, I've found the same thing. Flat-spotted a set when I hit a pothole at low speed on the back route up from The Spit via Beauty Point. I've fallen out of love with Mavic wheelsets generally. I think there are better options on the market... one of which is the Pro-Lite Bracciano A27s. I love mine to bits. I'm hoping they bring out a disc euqivalent so I can get started on a building up a disc-braked roadie.

hehe, well I share your experience with Campagnolo wheels - Zondas, Eurus and Shamals. But I didn't realise the Sciroccos could be had that cheaply now.

Probably because they are being phased out for the new wider version (at least in Fulcrum Quattro (LG) drag, but I expect a Campy version will follow)

The Scirocco 35s? I've had a set for about a year, they are good wheels at a decent price. :-)

I guess my $125 501 Shimano wheels with close to 9000klms is luck. [emoji39]

How do you know when to replace a set of wheels?

Many rims will have small dimples at various spaces, or a machined groove around the brake tracks of the sidewalls. When the dimples or grooves are no longer visible It's time to replace the rim. Some older Mavic rims had the indicator machined on the inside of the sidewalls; when the rim got worn enough the indicator would appear as a small rectangular hole.
I had a thought, but it got run over as it crossed my mind.

Doesn't say much for the standard wheels that are supplied with many bikes. Mavic Aksiums for example.
