Upgrading my old POS Flat Bar Roadie

Postby Berserker26 » Mon Sep 28, 2015 11:48 am

Hey all - I've got this old 2008 Flat Bar Roady that I've decided shall become a project...timeframe unknown (due to costs) :-)

http://www.bikepedia.com/quickbike/Bike ... solute+3.0" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Plan is to strip it right back and build it up with some new components. I've never done anything like this before and my bikes have always gone into the shop for repairs/services. If anybody has done this before some tips or help would be much appreciated!

I only have 2 Initial thoughts and/or wants for the bike - with the purpose in being a bit of a winter commuter and obviously just the fun of building it up regardless of how !! BAN ME NOW FOR SWEARING !! the frame I'm starting with is!
Colour: Chrome or GunMetal frame with Matte Black Fork
Drivetrain: Want to go 1x11, 44T with 10-42 on the back.

Questions/unknowns/still deciding -
Brakes: Think will have to stay rim brakes as no disc mounts on the frame. Unsure if will be able to put hydraulic brakes on a flat bar with rim brakes, have not seen it anywhere. Otherwise upgrade to some canti's maybe
Shifters: Think SRAM do a 1x11 trigger that would be compatible
Wheels: No idea, will be for commuting, just needs to be strong enough to take a battering over mixed terrain
Tyres: Undecided on 28mm roadies or a CX tyre
Headset - No idea, the handlebars are sitting on some sort of adjustable height thing, probably just scrap the whole thing for a normal stem.
Handlebars - Probably keep/reuse
Saddle/Seatpost - may reuse seatpost but will need new saddle to replace the big 'ol bulky thing that's on there now.
Bottom Bracket - No idea what will fit...no idea in general
Pedals - have SPD's on my CX bike so probably something compatible.

Probably have to replace the cables also.

I kinda want to get a component list together, strip the bike and get it painted and then start to re-assemble.

Budget: Unknown...I won't be buying SRAM RED/Force and won't be going for carbon bits and pieces but otherwise just trying to stay sensible for the most-part.

Also thinking perhaps I should get a proper fit on the current setup to give me an idea of crank length/seat post/stem etc...??

Magura HS33 for brakes.

Bottom bracket is probably a square taper, will need to be replaced with something threaded that suits your new 1x crankset.

Buy/make yourself a workstand, and buy a bike tool kit from one of the many online vendors.

Going 1x11 isn't going to be cheap. Might as well upgrade the frame while you're at it... wait, what?

Going SRAM 11 speed will cost you a fortune, looking at what the bike is, I`d consider 10 speed instead, far, far cheaper, you just have to forgo the 10-42 cassette and maybe use an 11-36 with an MTB trigger shifter

Maybe this http://www.this link is broken.au/shimano-zee-m6 ... dfire-pod/
this http://www.this link is broken.au/shimano-dyna-s ... -cassette/
http://www.this link is broken.au/shimano-zee-m6 ... erailleur/
http://www.this link is broken.au/kmc-x10-93-10-speed-chain/
http://www.this link is broken.au/shimano-deore- ... -chainset/ comes with 28/40T, take the 28T off or add http://www.this link is broken.au/shimano-fc-m54 ... ing-black/ I`m sure there`s even better options with a bit more research, you need a budget more than anything.

Oooh love the brakes - good find, added to the list. Workstand I got from Aldi a while ago, it's great, even just for storing the bike. I've run through the costs on chainreaction/wiggle...1x11 isn't going to be cheap you are correct, just crank/derailleur/shifters and I'm over the purchase price of the bike...

Will check out the BB's as you say, I wasn't sure if the space to put it in was a universal size was all.

Thanks for the tips...as above, am realising the 1x11 is going to be a big cost! Am going through your links now, it's good to have the shimano option to compare also. 11-36 is probably adequate for 90% of riding also...this is good! Things to think about!

11-sp. in most forms will require a new, compatible rear wheel, as the generic stock wheel is almost certainly not going to have the option to convert to a compatible freewheel body. The only 11-sp. cassette option that will fit the existing 8/9/10-sp. body is Shimano XT or XTR 11-sp. (as always, Shimano cassettes will work in an otherwise SRAM system).

As far as brakes, aside from the Magura mentioned previously, SRAM also produce hydraulic rim brakes, which could be paired to MTB/flat-bar levers.
I had a thought, but it got run over as it crossed my mind.

Now that alone is a great tip, didn't realise that.

Will check out mating hydro rim brakes from sram to a mtb lever also now.

Make sure you also use a SRAM brake lever for fluid compatibility. Different manufacturers use different fluids in their brakes, and all the internal seals are specific for use with particular fluids. Mixing incompatible parts & fluids will break down the seals & cause leaks.
