Another Wheely Tough question - Ultegra or.

Postby Thoglette » Thu Nov 12, 2015 4:37 pm

Looking for an option to the Ultegra 6800 wheelset (currently c. $450) which doesn't use tubeless rims and hopefully more (non-proprietory) spokes.

I guess 11sp is here to stay, regardless

RS81 C24? Same hubs, lighter rim. A bit more $$$

Or Fulcrum Racing 5 maybe.

Wiggle sell a wheelset using Mavic Open Pro rims, Shimano 105 11-speed hubs and Sapim Race spokes. Just over $400 but not in stock until March next year. I'm sure you could find a similar wheelset elsewhere.

I think unless you are gutter bashing you have to be a little unlucky to break a spoke on a decent set of $400 factory road wheels from the main players. Zondas would be my vote which would fit in budget nicely (yes prop but wouldn't be hard to source). I've thrown everything at mine (even the odd gutter and not even a wobble - and I'm 100kgs!) They also feel more solid than my rs81s. RS81s might be fractionally faster to spin up though.

Ps what would some hplus sons rims and pillar spokes with some ultegra or 105 hubs (or novatec ?) cost you to build up (or someone to build). Dunno but might be another option. Prob about $500 I'd guess. ???

If you are looking just to replace the front wheel Ribble have Ultegra front wheels for $170 minus 8% code shim8 brings it down to only $156 with free delivery. I put it in my cart and worked like a charm. $156!

There are also some ex display clearance wheels that look good...
