700c disc wheelsets.. which one?

Postby nandystam » Thu Jan 21, 2016 7:09 pm

I've had one of my cheapo wheels fails so it's time to buy a new set of wheels. My budget is around $500, and I've found the following options:

Pro-Lite Revo A21
COSINE 23mm Alloy Clincher Disc Brake Road Wheelset (out of stock until May so no longer an option?)
Fulcrum Racing 5 LG Disc Road Wheels 2016
DT Swiss R24
Kinesis Crosslight Disc V3 Road/CX (I believe there's a newer, but more expensive model of these now?)

I've ruled out the Shimano RX31's because there is no 6-bolt rotor version.

I know people who like Pro-Lite wheels, but they don't have this particular wheelset, but that is my current preference.

Which is would best option out of that list, or are there others I haven't considered? Ideally I'd like something relatively lightweight, but overall I'd prefer a wheelset with hubs that you can actually get parts for :P

I got the Pro-Lite Revo Disk late last year. They're a nice wheelset, a lot lighter than the set they replaced, and the freewheel has a nice solid engagement. They look and feel like a quality build.
I use them for day-to-day commuting and they serve that purpose well.
My only (minor) gripe is the amount of graphics on them. I like a more understated rim.
Sorry I can't give you a more comprehensive report, but I've only done ~1000km on them. Can't comment on the availability of parts.

Hunt 4seasons would be my choice I think if I had to by something off the shelf. I'm currently running DT240's laced to chinese farsport U shaped rims. They are awesome, but cost me a bit more than your budjet.

The only thing I don't like about Hunt is the lead time.

If you decide to go Kinesis, I have a BNIB pair of V3 wheels that are left after an abortive build. $350 and they are yours!

There are readily available adaptors to fit 6-bolt rotors to Centrelock hubs.
I had a thought, but it got run over as it crossed my mind.

Wish I'd known this a few weeks back

Mine are a pain in the butt to get tyres on, I've broken levers before.

Both awesome wheelsets.

Hey Drizzt,
nice hubs those white industries. Sounds like some very nice set of wheels sound expensive though.
I'd prob be leaning towards something like the BDOP (thanks MattyK).

What's the consensus on bang for buck?
Novatec hubs - cyclingdeal
rims - I am so lost here too many to choose from... anyone know a good source for those Pacenti sl25's
spokes - ??? might just leave it to the pros. Or is these somewhere good to get these?

Toying with the idea with letting my lbs build a set and he doesn't mind I source parts. Price wise if it ends up only a bit more than factory built I'd prob go the hand build route.

cheers

Novatec- try BDOP for these
Rims- Wiggle has HPLUSSON Archetypes for ~85 each
Spokes- Get the builder to supply- I got DT comps

I have Novatecs (non disc) and the Archetypes as a build, both have been excellent (hubs are approaching 10,000km all original). I did kill one rim but that was a chunk of rebar which would kill any rim.

When i built mine i found it cheaper to buy a prebuilt set of wheels off eBay with the Novatec hubs i was after and then hock the rim and spokes for a few bucks.

Look on the MTB forums for Novatec reviews, some of the MTB hubs are more robust than the filleted out road/CX offerings and a handful of grams heavier. Plus many of the MTB options will allow for swapping between QR and through axles at a later date.

Hey Takai,
Thanks for that. I'll keep an eye out for a set.

so far I'm thinking the following build
hubs - novatec d771sb and d772sb 10 speed (maybe cyclingdeal)
spokes - dt swiss competitions
rims - stans grails or alexrims draw 1.9s (see how much they go for)

cheers

In the end, I went with the Pro-Lites.. would've loved the Hunt wheels but just couldn't justify the extra $$

If only they were available when the dollar had seen better times.

I haven't been for a ride yet, but I plan to do that sometime this week.

The only thing I have noticed so far is that the rear QR skewers was making a bit of a squeal, which someone else noticed in the Wiggle reviews. Easily fixed with some oil but out of the box I was a bit surprised.

I have a set of these and they are brilliant - White Industries CLD + HED Belgium Disc+ rims.

Look nice and blingy with the graphics and you can get the Ti freehub bodys which last just about forever.

Yes broken levers too, but with Schwalbe Ones I aint had too many visits from the mystical puncture fairy (touch wood)...

I've done a few rides with the Pro-Lites now, and I'm quite satisfied.

Although, anything was probably going to be an improvement on the Alex rims I had

Hi,

Where do you get your "White Industries CLD + HED Belgium Disc+ rims" from? Is it from a shop built for you? Or you build it yourself? How much did it cost you? Can you please kindly PM me with the details?

I am in the market looking for a new 700c wheelset for disc brake myself. Was going to buy the HuntxMason but hoping to see a few more option out there.
