Ultra Sports. 630 rather than 622. There is a 32-622 (p.n. 0150142). I think the 'Tator comes in 32 too

Conti Ultra Sports - The only place I would ride them is to the Tip to drop them off... Worst tyre ever. And I see they have out now are the Ultra Sport 2. Probably the second worst tyre... :-)

unfortunately I don't have any worthwhile comparison of different tyres on the same rims.

my gp4000s 25c run at just a tad wider than 25mm (25.2 or so mm) on a dtswiss rr1450 rim which has a narrower rim.
my gp4000s 23c run 24mm wide on a prolite como.
schwalbe mararthon 25c run at 26.5mm on a prolite como

They are a completely different class of tyre. A schwalbe durano is narrower and smaller outer diameter as is a Michelin pro race in a 23 though.
I am talking 23's only with respect to a GP4000S. I don't know why I even replied in this thread  I don't own a bike that will fit 28's

GP4000S11s (AT) 23mm are 25mm. The same as the Gatorskin 25mm.

Yeah not a happy story. When I was getting back into cycling again a few years ago the Ultra Race Sport came with one of first bikes I bought and I couldn't work out why the ride was so terrible (I actually thought road bikes had deteriorated terribly since I last rode - I blamed the bike). I then bought another $5k bike and I experimented with wheels and tyres and pretty much those 23mm Conti Ultra Sport tyres made the $5k carbon bike feel like a $700 alu cheapy. The road buzz they generate replicate a cheap alloy ride!

Ever since its been 25mm or 28mm gp4000s 1 and 2, Schwalbe Durano Plus and Michelin Pro4 Endurance v2 have been heaps better and put my faith back in tyres! (and new bikes!)

I don't know about this different tyre size big deal!

Yes it makes a little difference, but as said previously different tyre brands can vary in harshness more than same tyre different size. Just chuck on 22mm 23mm or 25mm (if they fit in your frame) and just ride the bike!

Personally think a lot of it comes down to body weight as well. A 60kg fly weight can ride anything but a 100keg clydesdale needs to choose their tyres more wisely.

Everyone is different.

Size does matter for me :D or at least tyre size is a big enough deal to me.

I suspect that if I didn't have my nice fat tubulars with bugger all air in them to ride; my pedal miles would dry up due to diminished enjoyment of ride quality.

I've had no less than 17 cracks, breaks, fractures etc in both hands over the past 3 decades, these are my major limiting factor when it comes to achieving hours in the saddle. As a recreational pursuit, I could not face going back to my Giant TCR Advanced frame on 23mm clinchers, 40km was a challenge for me on that bike. It was not nice having partially numb (or worse still - aching) hands hours after a ride.

I run 22/25 Conti Comp tubs and regret going with the 22 on the front. Had to really lower the air pressure to get rid of the harshness.

25 is the sweet spot, perhaps consider a 25/28 front and rear combo. Would be a cushy ride. [emoji12]

Interesting. I've only run them in 25mm or 32mm, only on 630 casings. They've replaced Duros and/or the ancient tyres that were on the bike. The rubber was much sticker than what it replaced (no suprise there!) and the ride quality OK at the (much lower) pressures one uses with 32mm tyres. Handmade silk tubs they are not!

The GP4000 isn't available in 32-630 - Not a huge amount of choice on 630 rims between heavy, cheap stuff and the expensive stuff

softy wrote:To be absolutely correct you shouldn't run 25 or 28mm on 19mm clinchers (as per the manufacture) the tyres are designed to be rounder like a tubular and run on wider rims, so; yes they will fit but you are not getting the full benefit.
Are you talking about external rim width? Because the internal rim width has 28mm as the smallest size you should fit on a 19mm rim.

I was running 28mm on my cross bike for comutting and loved them, wish I could fit 28mm on the road bike, the next road bike (unfortunately I just bought a new one) will be sized to fit this tyre as I prefer 28mm over 25mm.

Just whacked a set of 28mm GP4000 II's on my Defy.
Comfort Plus at 70PSI front and 80PSI rear. I'll probably try lower pressure next ride (62kg's at the moment).
All roads around here are course chip-seal and rough shoulders.
Vibration through the bars and saddle is noticeably reduced compared to 23 and 25mm tyres.
Couldn't care less about speed, weight or aero gains or losses, insignificant difference to me.
Comfort matters most.

How are people finding brake qr with 28mm? My retro 1055 calipers, early 90s, don't quite release enough & I have to let out some air to remove wheels.

Yes going to a wider rim would assist with this

Brifters? If no, Tektro RL340 levers have a QR function that should give you enough room.

Thanks Shaun, last of the downtube shifters. I should have been clearer, this doesn't bother me as this is my weekend fun bike so on the rare occasions it has the wheels removed, there is a big pump to hand.

I was more interested in whether this is a common issue with 28s

I suspect it may be. Nothing specific as the only steed in my fleet running 28s is Lola and she's a disc girl.
The 25 Maxxis Re-Fuse behind SRAM Rival brakes on Chook are damn close.

I have this issue with 25c tyres.

Depends on your brakes and brake levers. You are going to need 2.5mm more per side than 23's. It's all about the brake system - if you've got mid-80s to pre-brifter brakes you probably don't have any Quick-Release mechanism anywhere in the system.

I've got Campy brifters plus a QR on the centrepull cable stop on one bike - so not a problem out to 32mm and probably waaaaay beyond.
Another bike I own with no QR needs a little "body english" to get the tyre past the pads if fully inflated with the same tyres. Much easier if slightly flat
