High pressure floor pumps for lightweights

Postby MattyK » Mon Apr 11, 2016 10:15 am

Hi, what are some good floor pumps for a lightweight female and 23mm road tyres? my wife tried to use my floor pump (a BBB) and nearly pogoed herself off it... I can push it over 100 psi, but she can't get the weight/height over it. Something with a small barrel presumably is needed.

If they're a half as good and reliable as their hand pumps I'd be checking out the Lezyne range.

I have a hand-me-down BBB floor pump and at 63kg's I struggle to squirt more than about 90 PSI into my tyres, although I only ride at about 80 PSI so it does the job. Until it breaks.
Narrower barrels lead to higher pressure from what I can gather.

I would think a silca classic track pump would be ideal. The barrel is a small diameter and not so long.

I'm eyeing off the Lezynes on wiggle; the pressure gauges read to 220 psi, which I'd hope gives some indication of their actual pressure capabilities.

My new lezyne floor pump is easier to pump than my older fluid pump. Not that the fluid was hard to pump in the first place, but I can notice the difference.

How they compare to your BBB is anyone's guess ....

If considering the Lezyne, be wary of the ABS flip thread chuck used in combo with the Speed chuck. I have the alloy Floor Drive model and it is a real pain to keep fixed on the valve and often blows the threaded collar off the Speed chuck. Many praise the Joe Blow pump and I would get one but my old standby, a 30 year old Silca track pump, is my "go to" pump now. I upgraded the chuck with an a SKS one I salvaged and it works a lot better now.

To the OP, does your wife "crack" the valve first before attaching pump by pressing it and letting a tiny amount of air out? Sounds to me like the valve is sticking closed rather than a problem with the pump.

It's not a technique thing. I was walking her through the process, valve cracking and all. Everything was set up to start pushing the pump. She just isn't big/tall enough to get over my pump easily enough.

Stand on a stool?

For reference, the lezyne pump is 30mm external diameter

Haha probably way out of your price range, but I watched a guy pump his track tyres up to 200PSI with one hand/arm using a Topeak Joe Blow Ace. That was impressive!

Not sure how light your wife is but I weigh about 55kg and have no problem with either my lezyne or blackburn floor pumps. For me the trick is to make use of my body weight by keeping my arms straight with my weight over the pump, and then bending at the knees to bring my full weight down on the handles.
