Replacing 10 speed shifter - road bike

Postby martin56 » Sun Apr 17, 2016 5:07 pm

Hi,
I recently broke my right shifter Shimano Ultegra (dual control lever, 10 speeds) and I’d like to replace it for less than 50-60$. Any type of shifter is ok as long as I don’t have to move my hand.

I was wondering if I could use any 10 speed shifter I can find, like for a mountain bike?
like http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/MTB-Bicycle- ... ZpwJYYB1Qg
Is there something else I should be aware of? (distance between each gear in the derailleur vs distance in the shifter etc.).

Thanks
Martin

No - you will have to replace it with a road shifter. An MTB shifter will literally not fit on a road handlebar - the clamp will be too small.

Cable pull ratio is also quite different.

4600 Tiagra is the cheapest compatible 10-sp. available (and actually Really Good, being cosmetically-tweaked 7800 Dura-Ace, the best shifters before 11-sp.).
I had a thought, but it got run over as it crossed my mind.

Thanks, you guys are real pros :) . There aren't so many used levers on sale right now. I guess I'll wait for a good opportunity.

Will any ultegra or tiagra 10 speed do?

The current 4700 model Tiagra is NOT compatible becuase Shimano changed the leverage ratio (the amount of cable required to pull the derailleur the desired distance), but any other Shimano road 10-sp. shifter is fine.

So is basically the 4700 Tiagra the odd one out of all 10sp shifters?

Note that I made specific reference to "other Shimano shifters"; mixing in other brands' components won't work, again due to different leverage ratios.

You can actually buy buy replacement parts for Ultegra shifters. I've broken parts on mine and my local bike shop ordered the parts in.

Bought Tiagra 4600 on gumtree for 35$+10$ postage, as new (vs 120$ new). Works like a charm now. Thanks so much.

By the way, I re-used the old gear and brake cables. If they are a bit worn out as in my case, it can be an absolute drag to slide back in the outer. I'd definitely recommend buying new cables if they don't come with the shifters.

Also check the inner gear cable isn't fraying inside the shifter, that's where they will always break, regardless of what model shifter you're dealing with.
