Hi all,
I tried to put some Shimano road shifters cables into my left hand apex shifter today and couldn't get them in, after wasting more than enough time I tried a Sram cable and it slid straight in. I'm guessing that they're made more flexible to alow for the tight bend they need to navigate through.
Can anyone recommend me some good cable sets? I've always bought Shimano due to them being well priced and although I'm not keen to pay the premium price that some cost I'm open to suggestions. Sram cables don't seem to be available.
Thanks in advance,
Pete

I have no problem fitting Shimano PTFE-coated cables to SRAM shifters. The key is to slightly bend the tip of the cable before poking it in to enable it to get around the corner inside the shifter.
I had a thought, but it got run over as it crossed my mind.

Sounds like you'd have the same problem regardless of cable brand in that case.Duck! wrote:I have no problem fitting Shimano PTFE-coated cables to SRAM shifters. The key is to slightly bend the tip of the cable before poking it in to enable it to get around the corner inside the shifter.

I tried that but kept bending the cable when I tried to push them in.

If SRAM cables work for you why not keep using them.
I'm currently using SRAM 1.1mm derailleur inner cables. Shimano cables are 1.2 mm diameter.
I am still using Shimano SP41 outer housing.
Shimano cables are overpriced in my opinion, especially the kits.
Just buy a length of SP41 housing;

I buy the 1.1mm SRAM cables from my LBS for about $4.00 each.
The SRAM inner and Shimano outer combination works very well on 10 and 11 speed systems I'm finding. Very little difference in friction between the cheap SRAM and overpriced "special" coated Shimano inners.
Previously, I couldn't get Shimano PTFE or Polymer inners to last more than 5000 km's. Not yet clocked up high mileage on the SRAM cables but at a much lower cost than Shimano I don't care.
Riviera Cycles in Bairnsdale (VIC) sell the 1.1mm cable. They have a website and would probably post you a batch.
