Brake pads?

Postby ausvegguykk » Sun May 08, 2016 12:43 pm

Sup all, i want to replace my stock brake pads with something better (but also cheap xD)
i was looking at these http://www.this link is broken/au/e ... -prod55823 which have some of the best reviews for the cheaper brakes on the site.
My concern is, someone mentioned that they might be made for cantilever brakes, and not meant for caliper systems...
my current brakes are these http://www.this link is broken.au/tektro-brake-p ... cartridge/
i'd get some premium brand like swissstop, but i'm not prepared to spend 30-60$ per set to replace the brakes

anyway, any advice or maybe other brake suggestions for this?

cheers

If the calipers are tektro also, some 11 speed 105 calipers and shimano pads would be an improvement.

Q
What brake levers go with this?

A
The 105 5800 calipers have been designed for use with 105 5800, Ultegra 6800 and Dura Ace 9000 11 speed levers. Your Tektro levers have quite a neutral pull ratio however so they should work fine with the 105 calipers. braking may not be as optimal as it would be with the 5800 STI levers but performance should still be decent.

What rims?
Wet or dry performance?

preferrably both performance :P, but i am going somewhere that is fairly wet shortly, so wet performance would be ideal
i have also replaced the claris shifters with tiagra 4600 10 speed

edit: also, i am making an order from c r c for other stuff anyway, so ideally i can get these from c r c

I haven't used these;
Salmon - Kool Stops most famous Salmon compound is also one of their most aggressive compounds for extreme all weather conditions especially in the wet, but still superb in the dry.
http://www.this link is broken.au/kool-stop-dura ... e-inserts/

Others on here have and rate them in the wet.
I just use std shimano on my aluminium rims
Get rid of the tektro calipers though IMO.

If you have 4600 levers it sounds like they have the old pull ratio and are better suited to 4600, 5600, 6600, and 7800 calipers;

Don't know anything about them sorry. They look pretty similar to the 4600 I posted up so probably OK.
I was hoping Duck! might have seen this thread.
He can't read them all I guess.

This thread might help.

I'm here! :-P

The pads in Shimano Claris, Sora & Tiagra are a fairly hard compound & not anywhere near as effective as the compound used in the Dura-Ace, Ultegra & 105 brakes. Replace the stock one-piece pads with a set of the cartridge-type so you get the good insetrs & you'll have much better braking.
I had a thought, but it got run over as it crossed my mind.

They look more like some kind of universal pad, according to the blurb. You might have problems with the long end fouling the forks or rear stays depending on where your calipers sit. For road calipers the Clarks ones aren't too bad http://www.this link is broken/au/e ... -prod55815 You can always ditch the Clark rubbers once they wear out and put in some Koolstop ones.

$28 for a full set of these is a no brainer http://www.this link is broken/au/e ... -prod42658. I've used them in all sorts of conditions and they are superb.

This is what I have now (the blue ones).

A definite improvement on the Koolstop Salmons. Got mine from local internet stopre bikebug.com.au for quite a reasonable amount.

I just started using the blue ones as well. I'm hoping they are as good if not better than the green :D I like the Kool Stop salmon as well but they seem to leave more residue on the rim in filthy weather.

Brakes are not where you want to be trying to save money. They last a reasonably long time and when you need them, the best is not too expensive.

I'm currently running the Swissstop BXP Flash Pro, which are decent pads. I have only been running them for maybe 6-700km but in both wet and dry. My preference is probably still with the Kool Stop Salmons which they replaced, mainly as the Salmon's initial bite in wet weather seems better. The jury is still out on this however, and time will tell.

Either of these two would be excellent, both have good feel and modulation and good to excellent wet weather performance. Dry weather performance is obviously excellent too. Both of these pads are better than the Shimano pads I have used, including 6800 Ultegra. The Ultegras are not bad, but I have managed to reach their limits when pushing hard. Wet weather performance on the Ultegras does not seem to be quite on par with the Kool Stop/Swissstop, although they are actually not bad pads.
