Madness for $349 ... So if you have been holding out, check the stores now.
Oh no, more tempting. Fortunately when I went to my local they were still full price. There were still four left and I wondered if Aldi had missed the market a bit by providing an admittedly good value bike at a price point beyond the everyday Aldi shopper.

Aldi are probably moving the bikes around to stores that sell well.

July - Tour de France month was good, however perhaps more suitable for higher level gear because the enthusiasts are more often than not, riders anyway.

If there was an oversupply - perhaps it is about timing and and the warmer spring and summer months are more appealing for new bike buyers.

I got nervous and ended up paying full price. They were starting to disappear around here.

What tipped me over in the end is that it does have lugs in the fork to fit a front guard, although it will require some careful work to get the guard between the top of the fork where it is quite narrow.

I'm thinking that it'll become my main commuter in time, although that will involve a front hub substitution to let me fit the dynamo lights. I couldn't run it long term with mismatched wheels.

Cheers,

Cameron

There are still a few of these bikes around at my local Aldi stores (there's about 9 Aldis in a 50km radius). One store has them marked down to $369 but shelf has price tag of $349, other store has them marked at $349.

The red one is the large 56cm, the blue is the smaller 54cm.

I've got a blue large and I saw a red small, so it seems that they came in both colours in both sizes, but whether the distribution was even is anyone's guess.

I'll try and post a pic, but I've got to do some paid work first.

Cheers,

Cameron

bikes at my local store are sold out already - or have been moved on.

Spotted a 12 year old on what I think was a Aldi Crane.... on the footpath about to tackle a monster downhill on a frame that is way way too large.

@AUbicycles

Do you know of any other stores that may still have this in stock? Called up a few this morning to no avail. My other bike has been trashed and would be keen to pick up a cheaper one in the mean time!

Hi hayden94103 - I don't know and can only suggest trying to call ALDI and see if they can provide info.

I think Aldi sometimes move unsold stock around to stores that sold well on a particular special buy. Just shopping tonight at Aldi Mt Hutton (Lake Macquarie) and I noticed that another 4 bikes had turned up there. Two large and 2 mediums if anyone is interested.

My local ALDI (Warriewood) got 8 back in stock - 7 M's and 1 L and a friend of mine (new cyclist) got the L and will bring it over for me to complete the assembly and check for safety.

I became a friend of an Aldi Crane buyer and helped them assemble today. He got it for $350 which is a brilliant price.

The bike was in good knick - quality of the build and paint was good.

One criticism of the handlebars is the lack of markings to find the center point. We measured with a tape measure - marking would make it far easier.

For the setup, the brakes (brake pads) were completely out of whack so needed to be setup, alignment, toe-in and space.

And the gears - front and back needed to be tuned. On the front it was a bit tricky and we had to pull a bit of cable through because the derailleur on the big chain ring was still rubbing and the barrel adjust didn't cut it.

On the rear cassette, it was tuning the limit screws and a little bit of barrel adjuster.

On the whole, my advice was sound, new buyers will easily get stuck and disappointed unless they already plan on going to a bike shop (+$100 - $200 depending) or have a friend who can help.

For the front derailleur when changing between gears, I thought that it should be two clicks going up or down, but then I find that it is not enough, I still get rubbing chain noise. And after some more time playing I realised that there is middle or half a click/shift which does help in my situation to avoid the chain noise. Is that middle click is normal for the front derailleur?

Anyone who is still looking for a bike, there two M and L at Prahran, VIC.

Trimming is where gears allow small movements so, as the rider, you can fine-tune the position.

This however shouldn't be necessary - though - the shifting up or down on the front is a BIG effort - a big crunching double-click which is easier off the bike stand and on the road.

I don't think these gears are designed for trimming - so adjusting (tightening) the gear cable should help it sit better. It is a bit fiddly.

The middle click is the trim position and is normal for the left shifter. Its role is precisely as you described, to avoid the noise of chain rub in the Big-Big combinations.

I've now ticked over 1,000km on my Aldi road bike, still going strong. I'm getting used to the compact gearing, and seriously considering riding this bike in the Giro della Donna.

The heavier bike with 50-34 vs a lighter bike with 53-39. I suspect that my choice for the day will come down to the weather conditions and whether the mudguards and rack will be worth lugging around.

Cheers,

Cameron

Thanks,

This discussion has gone a bit off the track of the Aldi Road bike. There are other discussions for Aldi specials, and the Aldi 29er.

I've just jettisoned the rear tyre of the road bike at 1590km. I could get more life out of it, but it had survived 1000km before the first puncture, and 500km before the next. Since my bike is a commuter I don't want to be fixing flats when I have to go places. So it is time for the 28mm Rubena Flash.

Cheers,

Cameron

Post up a pick of the 28mm tyres fitted up when you have done that.
Keen to see the clearance.

Come to check Strathpine Aldi which have 4-5 of them a month ago but now all gone. Also check with their call centre, they said it was sold out in QLD.

So sad
