11-40 cassette on a 10 speed road bike.

Postby newierider » Tue Sep 06, 2016 12:55 pm

hi guys, is anyone out there running a roadlink with a 11-40 cassette on a 10 speed road bike?
many people doing it with 11 speeds but not 10.

as far as i can see, sunrace and praxis are the only brands that make that cassette.

no "why!!" comments thanks.. :)

You can also add a 40 cog to a cassette

Plus you'll need a GS derailleur along with a roadlink and an extra link or two on your chain.

I'm not entirely sure how well it would work. The goat link will lower the derailleur to give the necessary clearance, but even with the longer cage I don't think the derailleur can wrap enough chain to cover such a huge cassette as well as the two chainrings.
I had a thought, but it got run over as it crossed my mind.

hi guys, just thought i would follow up on my original post.

so i did manage to source a 40 cassette for the 10 speed, as far as i can see SUNRACE is the only brand that sells them.

i purchased a roadlink (goatlink is for mountain bikes only) which lowers the derailleur in order to get the chain onto the 40t and everything seems to work fine though it is taking some getting used to with gear selection and the big jumps up and down.

i was on a 12% hill last week and it did feel a lot more comfortable, but i was surprised that the cadence was not as high as i had hoped, going from a 32 cassette to a 40, i think i went from roughly 50 to 65rpm, much better but i would prefer to be higher.

That sounds about right. 32 to 40 is a 25% increase. A 25% increase on 50 would be 62.5 (hope I did my maths right)

50 to 65 rpm is a 30% improvement in cadence, if you want to think of it that way.

I think you said you were targetting L'etape in December? If you can shed a couple of kg by then, and as you increase your fitness as you sharpen the focus of your training towards the event, you should be able to get to 70+ rpm for the same effort level.
