Hitch mount racks

Postby avolve » Mon Nov 21, 2016 2:54 pm

I am looking into a hitch mount rack which can accomodate four bikes, including fat bikes.

Seeking opinions and experiences.

A local option is ISI — http://www.isi-carriers.com/4x4x4/4x4x4 ... rrier.html
A very solid piece of kit.

Others options

Thule T2 classic — http://www.thule.com.au/details.php?p_i ... 4___2_Bike — with add-on for another 2 bikes — http://www.thule.com.au/details.php?p_i ... _for_9044)

Or the Kuat NV — http://kuatracks.com/en/products/hitch/the-nv/ — with add-on —http://kuatracks.com/products/hitch/nv-add-on/

The price starts at ~$900 (and increases from the ISI —> Thule > Kuat).

I am trying to find a balance between quality and price. Given the rack might only get a couple long-trip uses a year, and maybe a couple dozen shorter trips a year with the odd local use thrown it, these are all quite a few coin...

What other features do you want / need. I got a cheap rack second hand, but the downside is that it doesn't tilt which is a pain with a wagon.

You can get racks cheaper, eg Torpedo 7 sell a 4 bike tow ball mounted rack for $210, with lights an extra $72
Anything you can do, I can do slower

I have the thule. first trip with the bike was 1600kms.
registration plate/light board is separate is the only annoyance.
apart from that, it's solid.

Thanks @find_bruce. The torpdeo 7 does not seem compatible with fat bikes and I am a little concerned about the design more broadly (a strap holding the bikes at the frame level rather than somethign more secure). I have also seen it rebadged as buzz rack.

Might have to wait for a pre-loved model of the Thule T2 to show up on gumtree or similar...

I was just trying to find the rhino rack I have as it's great, but instead came across this one. Cannot comment on quality of it, just came up in google searches

There is also Gripsport as the other local manufacturer. I have there 2+2 and very happy with how easy it is for taking bikes on and off. It's a little fiddly to change over between 2 and 4 bike mode as I have a number plate attached that has to be moved. And it's very heavy for one person to attach to the car in the 4 bike mode.

I put my big w fat bike on my torpedo 7 rack... Just. The straps weren't really long enough to go round the tyres and the tyres didn't fit into the cradles.

In my experience with the T7 rack on other bikes it has worked well enough. Sure it isn't as quick as some others to load and secure, and it doesn't tilt which is a bit of a pain, but bang for buck it is pretty good. Once secured properly the bikes don't seem to move around at all.

It also isn't a hitch mount.
