"Value", durable Hybrid/29er disc wheelset

Postby 00tones00 » Mon Nov 21, 2016 8:45 pm

Hi,
I'm looking for a relatively cheap, good value, sturdy disc wheelset to use on light offroad and onroad. I weigh ~95kgs so I'm thinking that 32 spokes would be the best option.
700c or 29er Diameter
Inner rim width between 18mm-25mm (can handle tyres up to ~47mm)
Quick release hubs (100mm front, 135mm rear)
Ideally ISO standard discs (6 bolt)
Cost up to $400 but ideally would prefer to spend less
Support 9 speed Shimano cassette (so no need for 11 speed support)

I have found the following (centrelock hubs though) for $169:

but am happy to spend a bit more if its worthwhile.

Does anyone have any good recommendations for alternatives? Most of the stores I've checked tend to have much more expensive options with a lot less spokes so I'm worried about their durability under my weight

The Stars Circle builds are usually pretty much 'not great' regardless of the qualities of the hubs.

Personally these are a good deal for the $350 spend

...if you can up your budget another $50 then the Novatec Diablo wheelset that cycling deal are offering is a good buy too especially for the chunkier rider.
Ours is not to reason why...merely to point and giggle

For value, a custom built c r c wheel is hard to go past. You can usually get close to, or exactly what you are looking for in configuration. Also the price is usually very reasonable, if not cheaper than most other options. I find they come well trued with a high spoke tension and although they may need an adjustment eventually. They don't get really out of true fairly quickly, like some cheap machine built wheels.
Even if you have to pay an LBS for a true at some time, they are still a bargain IMO.

Although both the hub and rim options are fewer, at your weight I'd consider a 36 spoked rear wheel. I currently have a 32 spoked front and a 36 spoked rear wheel. IIRC the rear is a c r c custom built wheel.

Thanks for the suggestions - I've been looking into the Novatec Diablos a bit. One thing I didn't properly specify is that on the road, I will be using a 32mm tyre on the front and 35mm on the rear. Offroad will use wider. The internal rim width is 23mm and 28.5mm outer width. Officially a 23mm internal rim should use minimum 37mm tyres. I figure the 35mm will be ok on the rear but does anyone know if the 32mm will also be ok on the front?

Thanks

I got a c r c built pair, quite happy with them they are still true and use them on my wet weather commuter (non disc version). Haven't seen a whole lot of kms but I would definitely get similar again.

As nobody said, main negative is they don't always have all the options e.g sometimes the rim or hub might only be available in a certain drilling or colour. Sometimes I can't even find the option to configure it :!:
