hi guys, i am led to believe that there are double chainsets and compact chainsets. i am also led to believe that a true "double chainset" does not come in 50/34...
wiggle has a "ultegra 6800 double chainset" advertised with the dropdown menu option of a 50/34 with no mention of "compact"
am i right in what i said before or does double generally just mean 2 chainrings and not a specific ratio?
ultegra 50/34 chainset listed as a double?

adouble chainset just means there a 2 chainrings,... a triple has 3 and single has 1.
50/34 is compact, just means the rings are smaller than semi compact or standard, that's jsut what they're called so people know what your talking about.
you could say a bicycle has 2 wheels and a unicycle has 1, but jut by saying that you wouldn't know if a bicycle is a road bike, a mountain bike or a bmx etc

Hi Newie,
Compact relates to the ratios of the chainrings. ie 50/34 . There are 2 chain rings.
I ride "compact" Ultegra chainrings of 50/34.
"Double" isn't really a term used. "Triple" chainrings are getting rarer now compact gearing has come along.
Cheers

Prior to Ultegra 6800, the standard double was designated 6700 and compact 6750. However, 6800 introduced the ability to swap chainrings from standard to compact gearing. So there's just 6800 now and you choose which chainring combination you want (standard, semi-compact, compact).

"Compact" most specifically refers to the shorter spider arms and corresponding smaller Bolt Circle Diameter (BCD) that enable the fitting of a smaller than traditional small chainring.bianchi928 wrote:Hi Newie,

Shimano's new generation of road cranks technically are all "compacts" because of the use of a 110mm BCD rather than the traditional 130mm, with all chainring options fitting the same crank.
I had a thought, but it got run over as it crossed my mind.
