Where can I find a 700C rim, 36 hole, approx 24 mm wide?

Postby ausrandoman » Sun Feb 05, 2017 3:13 pm

I have worn out the rim on the front wheel of my touring bike. I have plenty of spare wheels with narrow rims, but they won't suit a 700C x 38 road tyre. Now that 36 spoke wheels are out of fashion, what are my options?

36 spoke out of fashion? You can't have looked very hard. The H Plus Son Archetypes I have on my touring bike are readily available. There plenty of others.

ETRTO recommendation for a 38 mm tyre is 17-23mm. This is inner width. The Archetype is described as 23mm but this is external. Internal width is 17mm, so still within spec for a 38 mmm tyre. It is also fair to say the ETRTO recommendations are conservative.

Wriggle are about the cheapest I have seen for the Archetypes - AU$89, but currently only have 36 hole in black or hard anodised grey. This guy on fleabay is the same price & claims to have polished silver 36 hole in stock.

Similar issue recently and tried a number of the UK stores for a strong set of rims (SJS, etc), postage was a real killer. Ended up buying a pair of Ryde Sputniks from this seller which ended up around $120 delivered for the pair. http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/302183570346 ... EBIDX%3AIT

You can get 36 hole Alex DM18 rims, which are eyeletted and have an 18mm internal width. They're not light, but are pretty cheap and tough as all get out so ideal for touring.

I have a pair of Mavic A319s in 36h on my commuter/tourer. I haven't put them through enough to verify if they'll last but they seem solid and people are generally happy with them online.

Have you looked at Chain Reactions semi-custom wheel build options?

Velocity Atlas or dyad or chukker are other options.

I wouldn't touch Velocity rims with anything other than a hacksaw....
I had a thought, but it got run over as it crossed my mind.

^ In what sense? Finish? Dimensions? Accuracy? Material? I'm interested as I've commuted on Deep Vs for years and really can't fault them.

You are displaying your biases.

Dyads are widely used on top spec touring bikes.

The Chukkers on my touring bike have been indestructible. And the quality is first class.

Like many other companies Velocity has had some quality issues from time to time. They are long past.

Poor material. I litetally blew apart no less than eight Aeroheat rims, and know of many others who suffered the same fate. Hardly unfounded dislike.

I also have had a Velocity rim blow apart at speed! Luckily it was the rear and was the 36H 700c OCR version. OTH like Ron I've used a 36H Dyad on my ss and 26" 36H Aeroheats on my LHT Surly with no probs over very rough roads. But I'm a bit ambivalent about Velocity's patchy quality now having heard of many issues and prefer the 32H H plus Sons which build up into very nice wheels.

Interesting, my experience like RonK's has been different, I've found them very serviceable and currently run 36 hole dyads on my gravel bike with 35mm tyres with no dramas.

If you have no life a few minutes playing with date windows in your favourite search engine will show that comments on this brand went from mostly positive to mostly negative a while back. Why is left as an exercise for the reader.

It was a nervous ride home last night fearing that my deep-V's were about the blow apart, which was compounded by the possibility my cables were rusty and full of gunk.

Better stop playing with your date and get your hacksaw out.

Keeping to the context of the thread, and the touring rims specifically recommended, the posts are overwhelmingly positive for Dyad, Chukker, Deep V.
