which road hub

Postby hamishm » Tue Feb 14, 2017 11:12 pm

I'm in the market for a new custom rear wheel. My likely hub choices are Ultegra 6800, Dura Ace 9000, or DT Swiss 350 (all in 32 spokes). The Ultegra would be cheapest, the DT Swiss about $100 more, and the DA $200 more again. I think the DT may be worth it (it's lighter than the Ultegra), but the Dura Ace not.

Any opinions to the contrary?

Can'tsay much abut the shimano ones (although my 1994 XT hubs are still going strong), but have soem DT wheels with 340 hubs that seem to do the job well with no issues.
(Don't like their skewers much though)

given the disc/rim brake transition phase, I'd get the cheapest and ultegra is decent stuff anyway.

shimano also have the quietest hubs :)

Good point about the disc transition. I just got a cross bike with discs and after just a few rides I'm already tempted to look for a new road bike with discs. So maybe I should save my cash and just get the Ultegra.

I loved my old Dura Ace 7900 hub, perfectly silent.

Rim brakes are fine.   Welcome to the real world.

+1 for Ultegra. You won't notice the weight and it's bulletproof. Probably save more and go 105.

White Industries Hubs are nice, Ti Freehub bodies last pretty much forever.

Good advice. They are $60- cheaper.
I broke my 6800 rear hub at the flange.
Some spokes pulled out/broke the flange.
I'd say I overtightened them truing the wheel and it broke sometime later.
I'll get a 5800 to replace it ;)

The current generation of Ultegra hubs are more closely related to Dura-Ace than previously, rolling now on improved bearings. The biggest difference now is that Dura-Ace still has the benefit of much faster freewheel ratchet engagement, which makes the wheel more responsive when you're on & off the gas, and smooths out the "ratchet bounce" shock loading when you shift gears, particularly under load.
I had a thought, but it got run over as it crossed my mind.

Now looking at a rear wheel for the other bike, after my factory built cheapy got written off by a car yesterday.

Is an XT M8000 hub compatible with an 11 speed road cassette? Any pros/cons versus a CX75 hub? The latter being 28 spoke only.

MTB hubs will NOT fit road 11-sp. cassettes.

Thanks, that answers that. (wrong info at https://www.evanscycles.com/shimano-xt- ... b-EV249142 then!)

What do you think of the RS505 hub, as it would also be an alternative to a CX75 and available in 32 spokes?

Can't open the link on my phone, but I suspect it's not wrong information, but not specifically noting the difference between road & MTB 11-sp. cassettes.

Late to the party but I Guess you already seen this...

Might give you an idea on the hubs at least.

Always thought the Ultegra wheels were fantastic value. Now I know why.

On the RS505 vs CX75 hubs, as far as I can tell the RS505 is essentially a disc braked 105, while the CX75 is basically on Ultegra hub guts, which as mentioned previously are now more closely related to Dura-Ace.

Thanks Duck, I will consider that when it's time for hand built wheels on the gravel bike, possibly including front dynamo. For now I've ordered a DT Swiss R23 db.
